I was contacted by an internal recruiter. I was not actively looking but was interested in the opportunity. Phone screen with the recruiter went well and I was sent a 46-question technical assessment. Some of the questions were straightforward, others required some research. My working style is to check my work and verify it, sometimes more than once. It turns out this was seen as a deficiency -- later on, they said I was "testing my answers".
I did a phone interview which went relatively well. It was technical but nothing impossibly hard. The interviewer refused to tell me which questions I had missed o9n the assessment (scored 43/46).
I was brought in for a half-day interview with the hiring manager, director, and several peer level people. I was thoroughly vetted technically by the peer level people. I walked out knowing they were not impressed.
I waited a week before I was contacted again to schedule a followup call with the hiring manager. On that call I was told that they "need to decide which way to take the team" - a clear indication that I was not in those plans. Finally after another week the recruiter scheduled a final call with me to let me down easy.
