      Interior Designer, F/T Salaried Interview

      12 Aug 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at RH (New York, NY) in Jul 2013

      Interview

I am a successful, accomplished interior designer who is looking to do something different and challenging, and I was approached by an RH sales associate who told me about the relatively new position. I did my research and learned as much as possible about the company, the culture, and the direction this company is heading with this position. I had a total of 5 interviews in 3 different locations over a period of 2 months. With each interview I came away learning more about the company and making sure to ask all the questions I could think of to assure myself this would be a good fit for me. The last interview was a huge eye-opening experience, and I came away knowing this company is not looking for creative, independent thinking designers. They do a fabulous job of showcasing their product in their catalogues and want to "designers" to push their products in that way. They do not look favorably upon high end designers, such as myself, who try to give each client a personalized approach. I felt the interview process was extremely long, and the designer who seems to have the respect and influence over hiring for this position is way too young and inexperienced to be in this position. Also, the position still has not been standardized and defined, which RH really needs to do so they will know sooner whether or not a candidate is a good fit. I did not get the offer, and I would not have taken it if I did. I think we both felt the same after the fifth interview that it wasn't a good fit for either of us.
