Went to a software developer's conference and one of the speakers was a QL employee, said they were hiring and to speak with him after his presentation. He gave me an email to their HR/recruiter office.
Had several phone discussions with a "technical recruiter" who really didn't seem to be very technically savvy, had poor people skills and worse communication skills. On one call he seemed to be really surly and borderline hostile. Acted like he didn't even want to be on the phone.
After two phone screens, I was asked to do phone interview by a hiring manager and a couple developers. Many of the questions were simple, others involved technologies for which I had no exposure to - not a big deal because no two IT shops are alike and no developer is going to be versed in every single technology and platform - for example, I was asked extensively about Angular, but I've used Knockout. Was asked about web services, but my previous gigs never used any. Certainly covered all their other questions, however, across the full Microsoft stack. Overall the technical interview was simple. The next day, I was told I would get a final interview over Skype.
Here's where it went south:
Was asked to do a HackerRank test, online (was told that had to be done a day before the Skype interview). Really?! Spent over an hour with peers and a hiring manager on the phone and now you want to give me a canned, online test? To make matters worse, two of the 5 questions were about... Angular and Web Services, which I told them I had no experience with. So I was deliberately set up to fail the test. Rather than pull this stunt, just tell me you're not interested and move on!
Worse yet... the bad attitude recruiter then told me that I didn't get the online test done in time. I reminded him he asked me to get it done the day before the video interview, which I did. He then told me what he really meant was "a full day", as in "more than 24 hours before". Which meant he "had to reschedule". That ended up never happening. I was called a week later and was told they went with someone else.
Looking back, I'm glad I'm not there. With an experience this bad on the outside, I can't imagine how bad it would be had I got in.
