      Commissioning Engineer Interview

      20 Mar 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Salas O'Brien

      Interview

So many red flags…Interviewed with the commissioning lead and HR. They communicated their expectations was 12 hours per day, 6 days per week with no paid overtime under the explanation that it’s a good “learning opportunity” and you can expense meals haha. When questioned why overtime is not paid they responded they are not required to pay overtime by law….80% of the engineering firms I interviewed with either pay overtime or allow some sort of time in lieu policy. The role sounded quite exploitative to me, I’m sure they will find some candidates who are desperate enough to accept those horrific working conditions but it’s not a good look for the company expecting employees to work 72 hour weeks with no additional compensation. Normal standard work week is 37.5 hours so they’re essentially hiring one person to do the job of two people. Suffice to say I withdrew my application for the role.

We’re sorry that this was your experience. Our goal in the interview process is to be clear and upfront about the realities of the role so candidates can assess fit early. Commissioning work is project‑based and can involve extended hours during certain phases, depending on client needs and site conditions. These expectations are discussed during interviews so there are no surprises. Compensation structures, including overtime eligibility, are defined by the role and aligned with applicable regulations. While this position wasn’t the right match for you, we appreciate the time you spent speaking with our team and wish you the best in your next opportunity.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Salas O'Brien (Montreal, QC) in Jan 2026

      Interview

I had an interview for Salas O Brien for a comissioning agent role based in Québec. The company expects you to work 12 hours a day and 6 days a week. They asked if I had a car so that I can commute co client site. No mention of company car or assistance. Not an hourly role, so imagine word 60-70 hours and only getting paid for 40 hours. They claim be employee owned, but in reality a private equity recently invested in them. The HR person was in the same team session as the interviewing manager. So many red flags about this company. I genuinely hope that no one works for them as it seems to be a miserable place. Ended the interview after 15 minutes, because a lot of labor laws were openly violated for such a role in Quebec.

We’re sorry to hear that your interview experience didn’t align with your expectations. Our intent during interviews is to be transparent about the nature of the role so candidates can determine whether it’s the right fit. For commissioning positions, that includes discussing travel to client sites and the project based nature of the work, which can vary depending on project needs. These expectations are part of the role description and reflect standard practice in our industry. Employee ownership is a foundational part of our culture and business model. While we’ve engaged with outside investors to support long term growth, our firm continues to be owned and operated by our team members, who guide the day to day work and direction of the company. We take this feedback seriously as we review how expectations are communicated in future interviews. While this role wasn’t the right match, we wish you the best in your next opportunity.
