      Data Scientist/Engineer Interview

      20 Mar 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Santa Clara, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Samsung Research America (Santa Clara, CA) in Oct 2014

      Interview

I noticed from LinkedIn that Samsung was building a cloud computing group in its research center in Santa Clara and submitted my resume. A recuiter called and scheduled an onsite interview. The company was not the one I particularly wanted to work with, but I was interested in knowing how a mobile device company uses the data they collected and there might be something interested enough to change my mind. Well, I made my mind right after the first interviewer. She came to the conference room and asked a question related to data and to process the data with hadoop. There was no context, no specifics about the data, and there was no question at all. So I started to ask questions. Instead of helping me to understand her question, she started to scorn me with something like "do you know hadoop? do you know big data?" Eventually she got up and wrote some samples of data on the white board. I got up and made some assumptions about the data and started to write my code. She kept asking "what's this? what's that?" I got enough and said "could you please give me sometime to finish this?" Once I was done, she said nothing but asked "do you have any question for me?" I said "no". We used about half of the scheduled time and she left me there to wait for the next one. At that time, I made my mind that this was not the place for me. I could just send a message to the recuriter and leave; but I took half day off and decided to talk to the other interviewers, at least to see what questions they might ask about the big data and cloud computing.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Write hadoop map/reduce to compute product of N matrices (note, this was the question asked by the 2nd interviewer. I would have written some code if he hadn't asked "do you know what a matrix is?") Those guys really know how to insult others
