      Systems Engineer Interview

      8 Sept 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Newark, DE
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at SevOne (Newark, DE) in Jan 2016

      Interview

Recruiter reached out to me and we spoke over the phone. A week later, I came on site to do a face to face. The face to face started out great as the hiring manager asked me a list of 20 Linux questions, which I answered all correctly. I explained my experience in more detail, which all aligned with what they were accomplishing and hoping to accomplish. After about 45 minutes, he said he was really happy with the interview and that he wanted to have me do an interview with one of the members from the Philadelphia office. The member in the Philadelphia office joined the interview via the TV in the conference room, the hiring manager explained how he felt I did and said he thought it would be great for the two of us to talk for about 30 minutes. After the hiring manager left the room, is when things went downhill. This member of the team decided that he would ask me to whiteboard a logic representation of how I'd create a highly highly available and highly salable application. I started using the white board in the room and after about five minutes, he realized he was not able to see the white board, because the camera wasn't a high quality enough to decipher what I was drawing. I told him I could easily just explain what I was doing, to which he agreed. As I started to describe my thoughts, he became distracted with his laptop and clearly stopped listening to me. Two weeks later, I was informed that while the hiring manager thought I was great, the "rest of the team" felt there were better options out there. Sure enough, a little over a year later, I've received three emails from three different recruiters on their team informing me that they really want to bring me in. Turnover here must be really high, so I have no interest in visiting again.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at SevOne (Newark, DE) in May 2015

      Interview

Initially they will call you for a phone interview that will see if you meet the companies needs. They also look to recruit interns heavily so it was easy for me to pass that stage. The second stage 1:1 interviews were far harder and they asked a few tough questions. Nice people but very driven.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at SevOne in Jun 2014

      Interview

Phone interview with basic questions such as why you want to work here, past experiences and where do you see yourself going at the company or in the future. One in person interviewing spanning an afternoon and meeting with several team leads and a few people chosen at random that I would be working with. FInal interview over lunch. Discussed interview process, the opportunity and some broad stroking personal questions. Offered job and began negotiations. Settled on details before the check was brought.

      Question 1

Most difficult question was more about how do you problem solve. No question was provided or problem to solve and as such, I had to give a very broad answer and dive into several scenarios that I have dealt with and how I solved them. Some involved deep personal research but admitted that on one occasion I had to utilize a consultant. To me, this question was to evaluate thought process and how I grew professionally and personally from it.
