      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Softwire (London, England) in Jan 2024

      Interview

Very Bad, very badly organised as it said no programming experience needed but that clearly wasn't the case. Uses ruby for some reason with some poor code. Then had to add code to a cinema booking.

Why work at softwire instead of another company?

Hi - I'm really sorry that you didn't enjoy the application process. However, there are a couple of misconceptions here that I'd like to address. Firstly, we don't state that no programming experience is needed - we simply say that not very much is needed. We recommend a minimum of around 25 hours of coding experience before applying. We assess all applicants in relation to their experience, so a relative beginner in coding doesn't need to do as well on our tests or in our interviews as someone with much more experience. For our entry-level roles, we frequently hire candidates who have less then fifty hours of coding experience when they apply (as well as much more experienced candidates too). Secondly, we use Ruby in some of our interview tests for a reason, namely that we want to see how candidates fare with an unfamiliar language rather than one they know well - and very few candidates know Ruby. The developer role at Softwire requires employees to become familiar with a range of languages and technologies, so this is an important thing for us to look at. We are absolutely not testing the candidate on their knowledge of Ruby (or any other language) - we just want to see how they respond to a new problem in an unfamiliar environment. I suspect that the 'poor code' comment above refers to one of our interview questions which involves giving the candidate some code with bugs in it and asking them to find and fix the bugs, and say how they would improve the code generally. This is the only question in which we provide a significant amount of code to the candidate, and the code is deliberately poor - otherwise there'd be nothing for the candidate to improve on. I'm guessing that this wasn't made clear in your interview, for which I must apologise.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Softwire (Manchester, England) in Jan 2025

      Interview

Mostly positive experience. Online test and HR interview were great but have been mostly covered here so I'll talk about the technical interview which I didn't proceed from. Consists of only 2 Ruby challenges where you will debug some already (intentionally poorly) written code. Challenges were interesting and a good difficulty but the format wasn't great in my opinion. For a company that mentions a lot about a positive attitude and having a 'buzz' for coding, I was expecting some sort of discussion or conversational segment to the interview but it was very flat and a bit awkward. I attempted to talk about various things but I was just ignored. A high bar for technical skills and being naturally talented are definitely the most important quality to getting this role despite what their website says. This is understandable as they are offering a great salary and benefits. Whole process was around 2 months but they get back to you very quickly after your interviews.

2 Ruby questions, 1st was entirely bug fixing. 2nd allowed you to write some functions yourself.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Softwire (London, England) in Jan 2024

      Interview

30 minute video call interview with a recruiter on Microsoft Teams. The process was straightforward and professional. This took place after an initial automated tech screening. The questions were mostly about past experience, interest in coding, personal projects, and interest in the company. They also wanted to know about my hobbies. There was a period at the end when I could ask questions. They said they would get back to me with a result within 2 working days and actually got back to me the following working day. At all stages they were prompt.

Explain something about one of your projects to me how you would to a non-technical person.
