Typical for a small team, come in, speak with the owner, meet the team, etc.
The wheels started coming off when I actually got to speak to employees, who immediately went out of their way to explain I would be working way past the numbers of hours my initial talks implied, without extra pay. Most employees I talked to were either on their way out or seeking employment elsewhere. Employees also revealed pretty much all of the content of the magazine is advertising, articles included. Between that and the overworked creative team, it seems that there is little room for iteration and experimentation at South Magazine.
Finally, the pay offer was way below what I was lead to believe it would be, and frankly you could make more money tending bar, so why would a creative professional work overtime for it?
