      Market Manager Interview

      24 Jul 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Pittsburgh, PA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Steel River Marketing (Pittsburgh, PA) in Apr 2019

      Interview

I applied online through zip recruiter and was contacted almost immediately about setting up an interview. I don't live in the area and drove multiple hours to get there for an interview later that week. The office was pretty small with a very friendly receptionist. Most of the employees I saw in there were very young. For the first round of interviews the interviewer just told me about the job and described it as being involved with managing a marketing campaign and eventually a team of people. He didn't go into too many specifics about the actually day to day duties. This interview was pretty easy and short (15 min) for the first round. I was then asked to come back the next week for a second interview. I was kind of annoyed they asked me to drive over 2 hours for just a 15 min interview that could have been done over the phone and then asked me to drive that far a second time for round two, but I was interested in learning more so I returned for the second interview. Both interviews were with different people, but occured in the same empty office that clearly didn't belong to either interviewer. The second round interview lasted maybe 30 min and was with a very young (just out of college age) "owner of the company." It was then revealed that this was essentially a multi level marketing scheme selling internet and cable packages in retail stores that pays a very low base salary with commissions incentives. You essentially start off selling the cable and then moving up to recruiting and managing your own team of people until you eventually can "own" your own business where the CEO still gets a huge cut of your profits. When I asked the interviewer to explain the business model and day to day duties of the job he got weirdly adversarial in his answers and seemed upset I dared to ask for clarification about the job duties. Same thing happened when I asked if this job included health insurance where I was told you could "earn a stipend" to cover it, but it wasn't guaranteed each month and was based on your performance because he "had to protect his bottom line." Apparently the bottom line comes before employee heath and wellness here. I think the guy could tell I was on to the scheme here and not interested, so I did not get an offer. Had I expressed interest and played along with his game, I likely would have been offered the job.
