      Software Engineer, Machine Learning Interview

      11 Dec 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at Substack in Dec 2024

      Interview

Meticulous and long. There was a 5-7 part process with detailed presentations, deep dive into system design sessions and many coding rounds. Be prepared for them to cut you off mid session with a made up story and then say they dont want to see you for the rest of the process. Its extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. While I enjoyed talking to everyone, I was extremely disappointed on how it was handled. Extremely unprofessional. I worked very hard to prepare a presentation that was asked of me and also prepped for hours for the ML session and water cooler chat and I wasnt even given the opportunity to talk about it and was cut off midway during the last onsite. I was abruptly told that all my interviews got canceled and got no information on why and no feedback on anything and then I was told I won’t even be given the chance to finish those interviews and be considered fairly. I have never in my life been treated this way. Please understand that candidates also work hard and they are also juggling other responsibilities while interviewing. This is simply unfair and unacceptable treatment.  Substack has such big values on paper about respect to everyone and being kind, but this seems extremely disrespectful to the candidate and their time. I will be sure to share this everywhere. Maybe I’ll write a Substack newsletter about it.
