      Food Editor Interview

      25 Apr 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at The Daily Meal (New York, NY)

      Interview

Disrespectful. This company was run by Spanfeller Media, and that body does not have the best rep. The very first thing the interviewer said when we sat down was "This job pays $30,000 a year. Will you do it?" The opening, Food Editor, was a masthead postion, and not only were they talking about salary right off the bat, but it was entry level. I was so thrown by the phrasing I agreed to the amount, but even then, as the interview progressed, it was clear that this was not a company that valued its staff. Additionally, they informed me they habitually did not pay freelancers unless it was a leading piece, but they never said what the criteria for such was. Given the low salary, I asked if there were other perks to compensate, like flex time, and I got a derisive "no." At one point, I literally rolled my eyes. The jig was up on all sides and I think we all knew there was no point continuing. I finished my questions, said all the good-bye pleasantries, and left. I did not get the job, but they still ran, in modified form, a piece I wrote for them as a sample.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1) Them to me: This job pays $30,000 a year; will you do it? 2) Them to me: Can you work overtime? (This was more of a demand than a question). 3) Me to them: if you source some of your articles from freelancers, what is the metric for payment?
