The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Toptal (New York, NY)
Interview
Actually everything was started great.
I applied Toptal with my resume and some informations. After 10-15 days I got an email about something like HR interview. I set the date and joined the interview. There was a smiling lady and the interview was really cheerful.
Anyway I passed this part easily this is some kind of english testing.
And the lady sent me the Codility link. This was the second part.
You have 3 algorithms to code and 90 minutes.
I solved those algorithms. I have collected from google for the code part to reuse them. I used those code parts with editing them like I needed Euclidean algorithm and I typed google, I found it I got those code block created my function and use it to process some distance.
This is what I do everyday in work life. If I need a package first I check NPM repo, collect them and use them.
Anyway I passed this codility part too. Then I got email for Screening Process where you writing code online and someone is watching you and where you can not use google stackoverflow or something else.
I have experience about 16 programming languages and sometimes I may got issue about syntax or something.
Anyway I joined the interview, everything seemed goes so well. I spent 50 minutes to explain my experiences, to solve an algorithm etc.
At the end of the interview, interviewer said something like "Oh, your code contains some code from google or somewhere that you provided at Codility section. We can not go further, you got permanent ban from Toptal. You can not come again"
Really sad to hear that because I thought that this is qualified platform and respect reuse to improve something. If everyone do the same thing now we would be still using Assembly. We would not have any programming languages or any technology.
Anyway this was my story, some of you find this funny. I want to say this to Toptal:
"Guys we are not living in 1950s, we have internet now."
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Toptal (Groningen) in Feb 2026
Interview
The first part is a test with 3 questions, fairly easy on common and basic issues. The live coding interview was a 30min task that is hard to complete in just 30 minutes, as you hardly have time to stop and think.
I applied through other source. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Toptal in Apr 2025
Interview
Send in pdf and they review it, and after 2 days I got into the waitlist, but it's generally a good experience. I would recommend anyone who is interested to apply.
Very reasonable selection process, consists of 4 steps and lasts for about a month if your availability is in line with their pace. Not like Google or Amazon algorithm-heavy and white board oppressif interviews.
