Sent my resume to the company via email after reading an ad posted on a job board with a cover letter. It was about three to four weeks before I heard back from them.
They asked me to come into an interview after a brief telephone screen. I was interviewed in a conference room, two copywriters sat all the way across the room huddled behind their laptops. They asked a few questions about my past experience and then explained the position they were hiring for. They showed me a few examples of web pages they created and I critiqued them. Be ready to do this if you are applying.
They didn't ask for references, no background check, and they really did not ask me about any past employment. The manager in the interview seemed to care less about what was said, disinterest, let's just get this done and over with. The two copywriters didn't seem to know what to say. I think I was the only person to accept the role, because the company has such a bad track record with copywriters and new employees in general. I did not know this at the time of the interview.
I then had a phone interview with the manager of the communications department (includes copy and design) and my manager, who was based in San Francisco. They asked how I handled pressure, what problems I have had in the past and how I would handle some specific assignments. They then went over the role and I learned they were considering me for a different role than the one I previously interviewed for. After this interview HR called and offered me the job a day later.
