It was somewhat referral based for a undergrad research shadowing role. The interviewing process wasn’t much of a standard interview but visited with a tailored program and was recommended or advised on who to contact.

Applied online and was contacted through skype by the PI. Very informal. Will ask about previous lab experience and why you want to work in the lab. Make sure to go over techniques that are listed and known how to perform them.
