I did a code review interview with an engineer who was incredibly arrogant and condescending the entire interview.
First, when I shared my screen and he saw my Github, his first comment was, “Oh, Github light mode, automatic 10pt deduction.” Who says that?! No one cares about your individual tooling style preferences.
Second, when I explained to him how at my previous job we implemented Micro Frontend Architecture to create a single Platform application for all of our solutions, he responded mockingly with, “Really?! I’ve never seen a successful production implementation of it.” Yes, there are thousands of software implementations that you have never seen before. Be humble!
Finally, when I mentioned I did a side project with Ionic, he replied disdainfully, “Oh, Ionic?! Is that even maintained?!”. Yes, over 5 million developers have used Ionic and it underpins 15% of applications in the App Store. There is a world outside of React. Expand your horizons!
This engineer is a good example of everything that is wrong with the tech space. He is self-absorbed, arrogant, and condescending. He clearly came to my interview with an agenda and set of prejudices. I’m not sure why he chose that approach, but I’m thankful he interviewed me because he speaks volumes to the engineering culture or lack thereof at UpLift. Imagine having to build software with such a hostile, miserable, and condescending personality. No thank you!
