      User Experience Design Interview

      19 Feb 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Viasat

      Interview

I initially had a quick call with a recruiter and they then set up a 30 minute telephone interview with 2 members of the UX team. The follow-up communication was poor and unprofessional post the interview - they kept me waiting - I would have assumed that they weren't interested, except - they sent emails indicating continued interest and asked for documents, said they would have a status update within a set number of days but didn't until I followed up, finally rejected me with no feedback.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked me to describe a website/application that I thought was well designed and why. They also asked me to point out flaws in the same.

      User Experience Designer Interview

      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Viasat (Carlsbad, CA) in Apr 2019

      Interview

TL;DR Hiring process is mind-numbingly slow. Top design talent may be disappointed in the level of discourse about design. ------- A typical interview process for design roles at comparably-sized companies takes 2-3 months with two video calls and a full-day interview with structured presentation and/or design sim. My hiring process took 9 months, during which there were several logistical/form emails, a couple of hour-long phone calls (no video calls), and a 90 minute in-person interview with no clear structure. Was offered little insight into the problems we'd be working on if I were in the role. The 90 minute in-person interview was rife with tech fails, and showed a lack of structure and thoughtful preparation on their part. They offered no input on what to expect or how I might prepare for the session. As the every touchpoint, they spoke about an institutionalized resistance to design by engineers -- and seemed somewhat resigned to it. I didn't hear about a vision for building a world-class design team or culture. Probably an interesting opportunity for the right person, who views the role as a career stepping stone. Definitely lots of opportunity to help the team to approach problems in new ways and engage engineers in formats they enjoy.
