Interview
Panel interview of 4 deputy public defenders, followed by final phone interview with the chief. Questions were primarily about experience and interest in public service. Interview was about 30 minutes long.
Easy! Very friendly, personable - wanted me to do well. Panel interview with the chief and the deputy, variety of questions to get to know me and sniff out if I had the right vibe for the office.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (Fairfax, VA) in May 2022
Interview
Two rounds of interviews. First round was the basic "why do you want to be a public defender, have you had a favorite client." Second round was to involve "hypos and exercises." Turned out to be an intensive courtroom simulation and a series of suppression/plea hypos. Asked to support suppression arguments with caselaw.
