I had been contacted twice this year to have a phone interview with a recruiter at WCPO. The first time, the conversation went very well and they stated they would like to move forward. Radio silence with this recruiter. Skip forward to a couple months later and I see the same position posted for an account executive. So I apply, send a personalized email to the recruiter I had initially spoken with the first time reiterating my interest, and heard from the director of talent acquisition wanting to schedule a phone interview. Same exact thing. Went through another 30 minute phone conversation with a different recruiter this time, and even made it a point to ask her what qualities she thought I was missing that would keep me from moving on to the next step or doing well in this position. She claimed that I would be a very good fit and would be contacting me with next steps. This was about two weeks ago and same experience as the first time. My takeaway from this is like many other companies, they fall on the side of unprofessional when it comes to their recruiting and talent acquisition. I have no doubt they screen a lot of candidates on a daily basis, which should reiterate the fact that the broadcasting industry, specifically sales, is a very high turnover industry. Just be prepared to not get a response if they do not wish to move forward. You should also expect to be told they wish to move forward in pursuing your candidacy, but then falling off the map. If you are serious about your sales and Business Development Career, please save yourself the time and energy and look elsewhere.
