I was given a 20-minute online screening interview for the Bioinformatician role in the Cellular Genomics Informatics more than a month after the application deadline. I was asked to give a 5-minute presentation during the screening, followed by technical questions.
Following my presentation, I asked the panel (the line manager, another bioinformatician and a PhD student) if they had any questions. They replied quite sternly that they would not be asking questions. Despite requesting a 5-minute presentation, it was clear they were only interested in the technical questions, which made the presentation feel redundant.
Then I was asked a series of questions on NGS, R and the command-line, etc. I had audio issues throughout the screening, which I explained to the panel and asked the interviewers to repeat the questions a few times because I had connection issues and could not hear what they were saying as the connection kept dropping intermittently. They also rushed through the questions and pressured me to answer very quickly, while I was trying to comprehend what they were saying with a poor video connection. They were very unsupportive, and at one point during the interview, the lead angrily told me to take my earphones and try without them because he found it irritating that he had to keep repeating the questions. The audio issues, coupled with the hostility from the interviewers, led me to miss a couple of questions, and after over a week, I received a rejection.
The treatment I received from the Cellular Genomics Informatics team during the interview arguably showed a lack of professionalism - audio/tech issues can happen to anyone. The fact that they raised their voices and exhibited hostile body language toward an external professional, and lacked patience and understanding in a screening, literally my first meeting with this team, is concerning and arguably a red flag about how they likely would have treated me if they had hired me.
