      Software Engineer Interview

      20 Feb 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Helsinki, Southern Finland
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Wolt (Helsinki, Southern Finland) in Jan 2023

      Interview

      1. Assignment round (took me 1 week): Build an API in Python to perform some simple tasks (receive a GET request and respond) 2. Technical interview (75 min): - First 30 mins: They asked about literally any random thing in tech. From the history of JavaScript to why C is better than Rust. Neither had I have any experience with C or that the job description require C or Rust. I feel like the interviewers just want to show off how smart they are. - Next 30 mins: They gave feedback and asked some questions on my solution for the assignment (round 1). The only feedback I got was "Looks good". Then they start asking random questions (again!), such as do I know that some random irrelevant Python libraries exist. I said I didn't, and asked how is that relevant to the assignment, they said they just wanna find out if I know. Again, were they trying to show how smart they are? Should I say "bravo, you're so smart"? (?!!) - Next 15 mins: A database design question. They gave me a real case scenario and ask what tables I would have in my database. No follow up question on my design, just another "looks good". - A few last mins: I asked them some questions about the technologies used at Wolt and their justifications. They stuttered, and couldn't even give a relevant answer. At this point, I couldn't take this BS anymore, I also got so bored, I just said "alright guys, good day" and left the meeting. In my opinion, Wolt, like most other companies in Finland, recruit people based on gender, races, and nationality, rather than actual technical competency. Anyone can tell from what they asked in the interview that there is no way those questions could assess candidates' talent. Overall, the most useless 15 hours I've spent in my life (including the assignment, interview preparation, and the interview). Millions of red flags were shown. I would advice avoid wasting your time here.

      Interview

It was pretty fast. I received an offer 3-4 weeks after submitting application. For some reason I didn't have Take-Home Assignment, instead I had what they called a "debug interview"

      Difficult interview

      Application

      Interview

The interview questions themselves were not difficult, but the interview process was very difficult because of the way the recruiter behaved. I got an invitation email from the recruiter 5 January 2026 and was asked to book a time slot. I booked one for 8 January 2026 and got an auto-email that confirmed the booking. The meeting invitation was lacking a link to join the video call, so I reported the problem to him. He did not respond. One day before the booked meeting day, I sent him the reminder about the meeting link missing. He silently updated the meeting invitation, instead of adding a brief message like "My bad, I just updated the invitation a minute ago". During the meeting, he introduced himself and then it was my turn to introduce myself. Because his self-introduction was rather lengthy and unstructured, I thought I'd better be aligned with the way he spoke. I could have made my self-introduction short, like 90 seconds, but I decided to rather go with the flow and tried not to be too concise. Still, my self-introduction didn't take more than a few minutes. The recruiter began to complain that my self-introduction was too long, and he also said that he would like to fix my "bad habit". He suggested having another meeting where he would "help me fix my bad habit", which was scheduled to take place 13 January 2026. He only verbally said it would start 9:15 AM. Because he and I were in different time-zones (the recruiter located in Sweden, me Finland), I asked him which time-zone he meant by 9:15 AM, but he didn't answer my question. He sent me another meeting invitation along with a few attachment files which seemed to include more detailed instructions about the meeting. However, he didn't manage the file access permission properly, and I wasn't able to view those files. I sent him a message to let him know the access permission issue, but he didn't respond. One day before the scheduled "fix the bad habit meeting", I sent him a reminder. He ignored this as well. Because I was not sure which time-zone he meant by "9:15 AM", I made the most of the educated guess and tried entering the Google Meet both 9:15 and 10:15 in my local time. His time-zone is 1 hour behind me, so this should have covered both case scenarios, regardless of whether he meant his own or my local time by "9:15am". In both attempts, I entered the Google Meet room 1 minute before the scheduled start time and sent a request to start the meeting. 10 minutes later, the session was terminated due to the organizer not responding to the request. After that, I sent him another email to explain the situation, but he ignored this message as well. Now I find this recruiter's behavior very dishonest, disrespectful, and unprofessional. Before he went into the discussion of "I want to fix your bad habit", he began to brag about his own career, having worked as a recruiter for 15 years for a few different tech giants, such as Twitter, Meta etc. Before I applied to Wolt, I saw one of their "About us" videos, where one punch line drew my attention: "High performance with low ego". Going through all of what I have described so far, I'm really skeptical if this recruiter represents this slogan.

applied for a position at this company but did not move forward in the interview process. The application process was straightforward, and communication seemed organized. I cannot comment in detail on interviews, but overall the experience was clear and professional
