I applied for this as a cold application, and received an email to move forward (which surprised me). After some back and forth with the recruiter via email, we spoke on the phone to get to know each other and the company. I was then invited to take a general aptitude test, which was a 30 minute test aimed at assessing your verbal, logical and numerical thought processes. This test had to be started and completed, without being able to pause. I submitted my results and was told I had scored well and I would move on to a take-home assignment. There were three tasks - first was a sample of their data log that you had to work with to find using some data mining techniques. I was most familiar with Excel so I used that. There was probably a better way, but I was a junior developer applying for a junior role. Task 2 was using a database they provided and performing SQL queries on them. I had trouble loading the information, but eventually got it to work and was able to complete it. The third task was to build an application that uses an API to retrieve certain information. I did not complete this portion, but did provide some code snippets and my thought processes to retrieve the information they requested. I had been given 5 days to do this. I put all my code and query results on GitHub, and submitted. They replied back and said they weren't moving forward. I requested feedback, good and bad, but did not receive a response. That was disappointing given that it was a junior role, I had spent a lot of time on the project, had good rapport prior to assignment submission and just wanted to know what I could improve on. I would say for a junior role, this was a pretty challenging take home assignment.
