      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Zoa (London, England) in Jun 2023

      Interview

Applied online and connected with a super nice recruiter. She helped to arrange three rounds of interviews: 1. Chat with hiring manager General motivational questions for 30 mins, James was super lovely and I could see myself working with him. 2. Coding Challenge with an engineer TypeScript coding challenge with an engineer, very simple question, lasted for 45 mins. The engineer was super nice too. 3. Final round of technical/non-technical interviews with multiple people in the team This part was where I wasn't even sure if I wanted to work for them for multiple reasons. There were four rounds: Coding Challenge(TypeScript) with two senior members of the team; Development Cycle Interview with hiring manager and a product manager; System Design interview with two other senior members of the team; motivational/team fit interview. I could appreciate the structure of the interviews but I failed to see what they really wanted to see in me ... the coding challenge was more to refactor the code (which was very messy) to make it more reusable, etc. I felt that given the nature of Zoa as a company I'd spent lots of time going through other people's messy code if I did get hired. I wasn't sure the product manager was experienced enough really to work with developers. Then the worst was the system design interview. The lady who "helped" me throughout the interview was passive aggressive in the end and being an architect myself I'm not sure she understood lots of the concerns I brought up. All in all I came out of the interview knowing I'd be rejected but felt very indifferent of the outcome as I knew I woudn't like to work for them. But I did LOVE the recruitment team and the hiring manager, they had made the whole process so much more enjoyable !

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Zoa (London, England) in Aug 2023

      Interview

The process consisted of roughly 7 calls, with four "final" interviews for System Design, Dev Cycle, Coding and Skip Level. It's more interview steps than typical companies of this size, but they do their best to group as many together on the same day. They are paying above market rate with good benefits, so it's understandable why the process is a bit more drawn out than others. I found out the decision a week after my final interview. The entire process took around a month from initial application to final decision. Despite not quite demonstrating enough to get an offer at the level I applied, they offered a 15 minute session to give some detailed feedback from each of the interviews about areas I was stronger and weaker in, which was very much appreciated.

      Interview

Had initial recruiter call, lady was lovely and everything was clear, then spoke to an engineering manager. Seems a very top heavy startup. Was ghosted afterwards and had to chase, was proceeded to the first technical with a very robotic interviewer, finished early and spent time on “extension” questions probing experience. From what I can tell the extension is not an extension and more of a necessity to move forward, even having finished early and completed the task was still rejected. Multiple follow up requests for feedback despite having invested over 3 hours of my time in this process were ignored. Avoid.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Fairly straightforward meter reading parsing question. Note: this is done in vscode via the live share extension so prepare to be in a barebones vscode IDE.

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback on your experience interviewing with us.We’re sorry to hear that the progression to the technical screening interview took longer than anticipated and that you didn’t receive feedback to your satisfaction. We share interview outcomes with all candidates at the screening stage and in depth feedback from onsite interviews. The extension questions are part of the interview process for all Senior applicants, this encourages discussion so we can better understand your engineering values and technical expertise. We appreciate and value your feedback and would be happy to discuss this further so please email us at recruitment@zoa.io

      Interview

This was a really weird interview. I probably had 7-8 sessions in total. It started well, I really liked the technical parts of the interview and thought they were thorough. Just before the final Skip Interview I got a call with a lowball offer and lower title. I did the Skip Interview next day and asked some uncomfortable questions and was honest, both of which were not taken well by the senior leadership. This is a great place if you like layers and layers of management (you'll even do a skip interview!), who micromanage and decide the technical stuff. If you love office politics and how you look like and can sell yourself this is the place to be. If you like to develop yourself, be humble and stay true to yourself, I'd say look elsewhere. HR was a great letdown in the end too. It was like were talking past each other. I'm asking for a written email feedback and they are trying to get me in to another meeting.

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback with us. We are sorry to hear about your interview experience. The team is encouraged to be transparent with candidates throughout the process and assess seniority at each stage, when we are seeing candidates perform at a certain level then we communicate this to the candidate so they are aware of how they are performing. We found this to be valuable in letting candidates know so they can make a decision on whether they would like to proceed if we may potentially offer a different level to the level they applied for. We would not formally extend an offer till all interviews have been completed. We are happy to discuss this further so please email us at recruitment@zoa.io
