      Software Engineer Interview

      20 Aug 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at eBay in Aug 2021

      Interview

Got hooked up by 3rd party recruiter to an SDE position. No HR call or tech screening, booked 6 hours virtual onsite right away, split into 3 sessions. First 2 sessions were pair programming. The first one was OK but I could feel they couldn’t wait to have it finished. The 2nd one looked like they just grabbed a dude out of bed to run it without any context. No intro, spent 5 minutes to find a working collab tool, typed in a one liner problem. I finished in 30 mins while pretty much talking to air. The 2nd part was expressed in such a vague way that I carefully confirmed the expected output on paper and spent 20 mins coding it out, then got told it wasn’t what was asked. And you just watched me going in a wrong direction for 20 mins and not saying anything? Probably wasn’t watching at all in the first place. Then talked through the solution to the actual problem and time was up. There are 3.5 hours of interviews left and I feel like telling the recruiter to just cancel it. Such waste of time. I have no intention to work in teams like this. I have spent about 30 hours in interviews for the past month, and this is by far the worst exp.

      Interview

The interview process started with a 30-minute recruiter screening, which focused on my background, experience, and interest in the role. The recruiter also provided an overview of the team and position. The next round was a 1-hour technical interview. I was asked to design and implement a Spring Boot application for an e-commerce website. The discussion covered REST API design, entity modeling, service and repository layers, application architecture, and coding best practices. The interviewer also asked follow-up questions about scalability, error handling, and design decisions made during the implementation. Overall, the interview was technical and practical, focusing on real-world backend development skills using Spring Boot.

      Interview

There were five rounds in the process: an initial recruiter call, a first manager call, followed by three technical rounds in a loop. In the first round, they assessed whether my background aligned with the role requirements. During the manager call, I was expecting a coding round, but instead, they asked three situational questions. After that, I received a rejection.
