Emphysema patients can breathe easier knowing Emphasys Medical is on their side. The firm makes and sells a minimally-invasive therapeutic device designed to improve lung function in patients with emphysema and other debilitating breathing disorders. Emphasys Medical's sole product, the Emphasys Bronchial Valve (EBV), is a one-way silicone valve inserted into patients' airways to prevent air from entering the diseased portion of the lung during inhalation, while allowing air and fluids to escape during exhalation. The firm has received approval for its EBV in Europe and is selling it there on a limited basis. It is currently seeking regulatory approval for the valve from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
