Description The scientists and staff at the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) are really down to earth folks. The team of about 200 professionals conducts traditional and applied research in topics ranging from the state's minerals to coastline and wetland geology, coal and gas resources, and earthquake history. The ISGS compiles geologic maps, and gathers and manages the state's geological data, making the information available to industry, governmental agencies, and the public. The research is used to plan economic development in the state, as well as preserve its environmental security. The ISGS is an affiliated agency of the University of Illinois and a division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
