The legislative body of Indiana government, the General Assembly is comprised of the Indiana House of Representatives (with 100 members elected to two-year terms) and the Indiana Senate (consisting of 50 elected officials serving four-year terms). The legislature enacts laws, has the authority to raise and lower taxes, and approves the state's budgets. During odd-numbered years the Indiana General Assembly holds long sessions, beginning in January, meeting for 61 days, and adjourning by the end of April. During even-numbered years it conducts short sessions which meet for 30 days and adjourn by mid-March.
