Network General provides application and network management hardware and software, including the Sniffer line of performance and security analysis products. Sniffer products can diagnose the performance of both wired and wireless networks built on multiple topologies. The company also provides consulting, support, and training services. Its target sectors include government, financial services, and telecommunications. Originally founded in 1986, Network General was acquired by McAfee in 1997; buyout specialists Silver Lake Partners and Texas Pacific Group acquired the business from McAfee in 2004. Rival NetScout Systems bought Network General for $206 million in 2007.
