The university offers some 130 undergraduate and master programs, as well as doctoral programs in counselor education, criminal justice, educational leadership, reading, and clinical psychology. Sam Houston State was founded as Sam Houston Normal Institute in 1879 and is named after Texas hero General Sam Houston.
