Description Part of the Texas State University System, Sam Houston University has an enrollment of some 17,000 students. It consists of six schools: Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Education, Fine Arts and Mass Communications, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Sciences. The university offers some 130 undergraduate and master programs, as well as doctoral programs in counselor education, criminal justice, educational leadership, reading, and clinical psychology. Sam Houston State was founded as Sam Houston Normal Institute in 1879 and is named after Texas hero General Sam Houston.
