Description The United States Transportation Command uses planes, trains, and automobiles to move Department of Defense people and cargo about the globe. It controls a fleet of about 1,300 aircraft, 2,200 railcars, 90 ships, and $1.4 billion in infrastructure, valued in excess of $52 billion. It also has access to 1,000 aircraft in the Civil Reserve Air Fleet and 360 vessels in the Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement. The command operates three components: the Air Force's Air Mobility Command, the Navy's Military Sealift Command, and the Army's Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. It employs about 52,000 active duty, 88,000 reserve and Guard, and 16,500 civilian personnel.
