Pros

When they are busy you can put in unlimited hours producing aerospace tools and the work is good also while busy your paychecks will be huge. On the surface they will smile at you and tell you how very valuable you are to the company. They lead you to believe that all that was promised during your initial interview is true. There are small bonuses, medical, optical, dental, short and long term disability insurance and a 401k plan. They provided prescription safety glasses at no charge to us and they have a work uniform plan.

Cons

I was hired on the spot at my interview and promised a review and a wage increase, (at 90 days), if I would start at a lower wage than what I was asking for, ($4.00 per hour less), and I was told that they had contracts for work that would keep us all busy for the next 5 years. I was told that they were to purchase a number of new machines, (several Bridgeport mills, and a radial drill). What they purchased was 1 cheap knee mill and several bench grinders. I never got the review nor did I ever get the wage increase that was promised to me. My direct supervisor told me that, "we'll make it happen", but they never did. They changed insurance companies and our copays went through the roof as a prescription that had previously cost us $20.00 per month would now cost us $60.00 per month, with many prescription drugs now not even covered. Our copay to see a doctor went up and to see a specialist we were now going to pay double in office copays. I was hired in August of 2015 and I worked many 80 hour weeks but after the first of the year the work was mainly gone. The president of the company had a meeting with all of the employees to tell us that work was on the way and that none of us were going to be laid off. In March of 2016 the rumors started going around about layoffs and we were told no disregard them. By the end of March they were firing and laying off employees in large groups. I we were told to lock our tool boxes, change out of our work clothes, get our personal things, (lunch boxes, coats, shoes and anything else from our lockers and taken to the conference room where we were laid off. We were not going to be allowed to even finish the day out let alone the rest of the week. The last 3 months I was there we were talked down to like second rate citizens and made to believe that we were useless.

Pros

Very interesting line of work. (granted, it's just my opinion) Competitive pay if you have experience going into the role. Challenging tasks keep you mentally engaged. Some roles/departments pay overtime.

Cons

Full of workaholics. Most engineers that are happy working at AIT are single, child-free, pet-free, and prioritize work over everything else. Engineers with families tend to not do well in this environment due to how demanding it is. Some people enjoy it, others don't. Know what you're getting yourself into. Expected to travel 2-3 weeks at a time with hardly any notice. By the time Wednesday comes around, you still don't know if you'll be home for the weekend or not since project plans change every 10 minutes. Working weekends and having to cancel your personal plans is a regular occurance since travel notifications have such a short notice. If interviewing for a role that requires travel, be sure to get a better understanding of what the travel percentage actually means. Most of my coworkers said the amount of travel required was incredibly undersold at interviews. For example, if travel is 50%, expect having to travel for up to 6 months at once, not just 2 weeks out of the month or 2 nights a week. Get clarification on things like this if it's something that could possibly affect your happiness. Witnessed new grads getting paid below market until 'they prove themselves'. Every project is an emergency and you're constantly putting out fires. Overpromising on deadlines: Rarely given enough time to complete a project during business hours so you have to put in extra hours. Since everyone has to do that, it becomes the norm and it's expected of everyone. If it was on a rare occasion, it'd be one thing, but every project is behind, delayed, and rushed. If your role gets paid overtime, you are expected to 'take advantage of it' and work all the time since that's what other people do. As I said, this company's culture isn't for everyone; but for the right person, it could be great.
