Pros

A lot of really good people who work hard & care a lot. Benefits are good. State College is a pretty cool place to live. Good place to gain experience in multiple areas of the company.

Cons

The biggest con is Joel Myers. So many of the issues at AccuWeather stem from things that he has done or decisions he has made. He's responsible for AccuWeather's terrible reputation in the weather industry. He's responsible for AccuWeather's terrible reputation as a place to work because he treats everyone he works with like they're incompetent and worthless. HR and others under him do nothing to push back on his insane demands. Because no one ever says no, employees are rushing around trying to do whatever he wants instead of focusing on well thought-out and approved roadmaps. Hard to ever accomplish anything when you're constantly trying to fulfill impossible demands. Shift workers are largely forgotten about, although improvements have been made in the past 6 months or a year to include them in other office happenings. Numerous people, even whole teams, have been laid off or let go recently. There is never any communication to the rest of the staff about this, so a) there is a lot of uncertainty and fear about job security, and b) we don't even know who to turn to or ask about certain things because people are just gone. It's seemingly impossible to let go of people who don't carry their weight, but other, higher performers can be let go with no notice because of restructuring?

Pros

At AccuWeather, I was a part of a very close-knit team that slowly started to feel like my family. Above all, my manager was phenomenal and shielded me from the harsh office politics that came from above, contributed to my personal development, and emerged as more of a life mentor than a 'boss'.

Cons

During the last few months I was with the company, my department went through a 'restructure' that, along with random lay-offs, left everyone with a feeling of uncertainty on a daily basis. The communication was so unbelievably poor in this time that anyone felt like they could be next. For me, the pay was also an issue. As a woman in a STEM career, I had to live 45 minutes outside of the smaller college town to be able to afford to live day-to-day on my salary along with paying back my student loans, which also meant sacrificing the ability to have a savings account. I went two years in a row with gleaming reviews and 'cost of living' raises each time, although when I was hired, I was assured that this would not be an issue. I'm lucky I even received performance evaluations, though, because one of my close friends never did in over a year-and-a-half with the company. AccuWeather's motive is very clear that they want to hire people for the cheapest they can and then bombard them with the highest of expectations. It is stressed in every large meeting that AccuWeather's number one corporate goal is that the people are the heart of its success... and unfortunately that became a joke to many throughout my last few months with the company.

Pros

There are some really great people who work for accuweather. They seem to be improving their digital content.

Cons

Many issues that senior leadership is aware of are ignored outright due to the closeness of relationships. Inappropriate and disruptive relationships are ignored, although they are openly discussed. speaking up is useless. Toxic work environment is the biggest takeaway. Employees fear retaliation for speaking up on important issues, because they feel their job is at risk. The amount of disharmony and bullying that goes on leaves you wondering if leadership is either blind, or just does not care. Really good people leave after a year or even less because the company and experience looks great on a resume, and the problems within make any other opportunity seem attractive. Unfortunately, they won’t pay more to keep great people yet constantly drill into everyone’s heads that the organization is growing rapidly. The pay scales make no rational sense, and there are large differences in pay for those who do the exact same job. The company is downsizing, job security is up in the air. A lot of great employees have been pushed out who put a considerable amount of time in. The nature of the Company’s ownership is problematic. The owners refuse the change a thing, which makes the culture extremely stiff (you would think a media company would be more progressive... its not).
