Pros

It is fun and challenging (in a good way) to work with children and the general public. The majority of the staff are nice people who are fun to work with. The center is clean and well maintained by dedicated staff.

Cons

Lack of variety of food/snacks available. Only Subway or bring your own lunch. This means a narrow variety that Subway offers. The salary structure is a bit outdated for many on staff. There are those with higher degrees and more experience than some "managers" who get more work dumped on them, with less pay and respect. There are several managers who openly mention the low pay and badmouth the center and upper management, then turn around and kiss up to them and volunteer their time to do all kinds of extra stuff in some twisted attempt to make them look like the best employees. After the recent major turnover of staff, there are many who are new on staff and don't realize they may be being taken advantage of. Others who have remained, just want to lay low and hope the worse is over. The science center was in dire need of change and a more modern approach to things. Some of that wasn't done right and that led to bad feelings and even some misinformation being spread. Unfortunately there is still some resentment around and people are still uneasy about more changes that are expected over the next few years. I left ASC for something better and hold no grudge. I hope that upper management and the CEO can sort out the issues and keep communication open. That would be key.

Pros

Usually great co-workers and generally fun atmosphere. The pay is really great for a part-time job, especially for a college student needing some fun money.

Cons

The interview was setup so that they sold you a really awesome opportunity. They asked all these questions about my experience, but never really translated it to the job after a certain point. Supervisors never set clear expectations for Adventure Guides aside from "engage with guests" which doesn't exactly work in a place that's trying to be a museum and not a retail store. If you didn't engage the way they wanted you to (which was never really communicated), they "wrote you up." I cannot confirm this, but it seemed some Adventure Guides were favored over others if they could provide ASC with outside resources for special events. A handful of Adventure Guides have/had specialized knowledge in certain scientific areas and were not allowed to work with things relating to that. A lot of days, volunteers would be doing things that we were told in the interview we would be doing. A lot of standing around. Many weekdays were very slow and staying productive was difficult. Goalposts were shifted regularly and supervisors rarely checked in. They tried to create "structure," "weekly meetings," among other things that were going to happen regularly, but just never did. When you did something you thought would be productive, it was squashed down pretty quickly. Other employees in full-time and higher paying roles have expressed similar concerns.

Pros

Staff are friendly and creative to work with. If you like science, ASC can be a fun place to work. Good job to get entry-level experience. ASTC membership is a plus.

Cons

Very low pay. The organization acknowledges that it under pays, but is not willing to increase salaries. Upper leadership only cares about revenue, not the organizational mission or the staff. Poor leadership can be felt throughout the whole organization, and trickles-down from executive leadership to managers to everyone else. You can't look up to managers/leadership to learn or gain mentorship. Staff feel lied to. Poor communication between leadership and staff, and poor communication between departments. Very little training and professional development available. Very little growth opportunity. The organization prefers to hire from the outside instead of hiring from within. High turnover - most staff stay long enough to gain a bit of experience, then leave to go places where they will be valued and paid fairly for their work.

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to give your feedback. I would be glad to talk about your thoughts more specifically, as I am always open to ideas for how we can improve. As the person who's ultimately accountable for this team, it's never easy to read about an unfavorable experience here. I would like to add some information about the compensation and growth opportunity comments. We've historically provided annual cost of living adjustments across the board. And as I mentioned previously, this year we completed a compensation analysis and benchmarking study on all of the positions at ASC; from that study, we've shared with all staff a transparent process for determining base pay and increases so that we are equitable, fair, and tied to market. Also, more than half of the staff will receive market-based pay increases this year, as was announced during an all-staff meeting last fall. I am proud of those efforts. With regard to internal advancement, we've made some great promotions within the organization - at least 9 over the last 18 months (with a full-time staff of about 45, that's 20% of the roles filled via internal promotion), and we always are proud to champion team members who want to grow and take on greater roles within ASC. It's not only great for them to advance their career, but also for ASC to retain strong staff who are committed to our future. Leadership cares deeply about our mission, and our team. As a former school science teacher, what we do here couldn't be more important to me. And as someone who wants to see ASC be as successful as possible, I welcome a conversation with you to dive into your thoughts and ideas about how to accomplish that goal. I would appreciate it. Thanks, -Steve
