      Manager, Client Services

19 Dec 2022 - Manager, Client Services in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

I cannot say enough positive things about AlphaSights. It has truly shaped the trajectory of my career and has provided me with invaluable skills I would not have dreamed of gaining exposure to this early on in my tenure (including managing direct reports and owning a large book of business.) The level of responsibility and autonomy you are granted here is unprecedented! You learn about key skills you can take with you throughout your entire career, including emotional intelligence and resilience, persistence, drive, humility, teamwork, and leadership. One of the most motivating aspects of the role for me is that you see the direct impact of what you do and the effect it has on your clients, the bottom line of the company, and the broader industry and world. The career trajectory is transparent and extremely generous (opportunities to be on the senior leadership team in the late 20s). The leadership team is extremely trustworthy and runs an excellent ship. The real reason people love it here, however, is the unbeatable culture. It is refreshing to work alongside hard working colleagues who take great pride, ownership, and passion for their work; it is most definitely a "wins" culture and we all lift each others spirits and collaborate frequently, and we like to have fun after the workday! There are plenty of fun team events, perks, office happy hours, etc.

      Cons

This isn't necessarily a con, but if you are considering a job here, be ready to work! The job is made for people who are extremely driven, goal oriented, fast-paced, and don't mind putting in a 10 hour work day here and there (and will directly see the impact and reward of this work). Overall, however, vacation time and OOO is honored and taken seriously here, and there is minimal (if any) weekend work if you are efficient!

Gives employees autonomy and you have a direct impact on the bottom line of a fast paced, high growth company

      Cons

Most of senior management have grown up within the firm, so getting a variety of perspective can be difficult.

      Pros

      - All of your co-workers are fresh out of college/young like you - Direct path toward promotion (manager in 2 years, VP in 4-5) - They do their best to improve company culture

      Cons

      - LONG hours - 8am-6pm are official hours, which they don’t tell you when you interview - The job is so draining. You essentially have to call/dm/harass other business professionals to get them to talk to you & eventually to your clients - If you’re anything other than an extrovert, AVOID THIS JOB. Too much social interaction expected of you with both the clients/experts and also your young coworkers - cause ya know, they gotta keep up appearances and organize ‘fun’ events in the workplace - Everyone is tired but pretending not to be. Generally an insanely toxic and ‘fast paced’ (derogatory) place to work. - The ‘performance pay’ is not what they portray it to be during the interview process - they drop the ball on you last minute.

Great place to begin you career

      Pros

AlphaSights is a great place to begin your business career. You work with demanding clients on interesting topics every day and this is a great way to get a basic understanding of business. Like any first job, there are trade-offs and not everything is perfect. For instance, you might have to do some tasks you don't enjoy - shock! But what you get in return is a high ownership role in which you are the key determinant to your success and a lot of transferable soft skills. The company has a young dynamic culture and the people are great fun. The Manager role is very unique and gives hands-on very early experience in people and account management. Compensation is very good for a graduate role, especially considering you have the potential for an uncapped bonus. The company and role demand a fair amount from you and if you are work-shy and idealistic about the world of work, you will struggle.

      Cons

Because management is given responsibility so early on in their careers, they get decisions wrong. It's worth the risk but it undoubtedly creates problems.

      Glorified Call Center - Beware

2 Feb 2023 - Associate in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Everyone is young and relatable in which associates can openly vent to each other about how much they hate the job. - The base pay is decent for a new grad and the only reason anyone would stay at Alphasights. - There are gems in which some managers and VPs are great people.

      Cons

      - A particular SVP is known to have made wildly inappropriate sexual remarks. - AlphaSights won't teach you any hard skills and the exit opportunities are slim to none unless you really spin it as a project management role or sales role. AlphaSights markets itself as a management consulting firm but unfortunately, consulting firms like Bain and McKinsey know that AlphaSights isn't 'real consulting' and know that you won't have the skills coming out of this associate role, so good luck trying to get hired in consulting after AlphaSights. - Upper management refuses make the associate job more efficient. You have to manually send out every cold email which takes up 80% of your time. No one needs a college degree for this brainless, repetitive task of clicking a single button. - Upper management is finance-bro wannabes.

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Fast career track, great responsibilities at an earlier stage. Early elevation compared to other firms. Great people, the recruiting team is very good that they continue hiring very similar type of people - young, outgoing, extrovert and hardworking. I didn't come across any single bad person at the firm.

      Cons

75% of employees are between 22-27. Office sometimes feels like college. Exploitive of its employees. When you do well, they love you. Once you start going off the track whether that's because of your capability or because of your personal circumstances, they'll let you go down the hill. It used to be flexible in terms of remote work, it's now strictly 4-1 model (M-T in office, 4 days of flexible WFH allowance per quarter).

Stay Far Far Away- Unless You Want Crippling Anxiety

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good location, I met some genuine friends here as everyone is young and from similar international backgrounds

      Cons

There is absolutely no job security in this role. Stay far away, especially if you require a visa to work. You will be overworked and not appreciated. The target is not easy to hit, and clients cancel calls last minute. This is not reflected, and all your hard work goes to nothing. It is entirely a sales job which success depends on other factors than how much you work, e.g the client not canceling the calls etc. People are fired with a same day notice, and there is absolutely no work-life balance. You are expected to work overtime every single day, and many employees are burn out/ slash are anxious the entire time. Do not be tricked by the starting salary or the buzzwords, this is a toxic and rotten company

      Pros

I have met great people. Good base salary right out of college (but do you research into this!!!)

      Cons

These cons are written based on my personal experiences and observations. I'll start by saying AlphaSights always says "this job isn't for everyone" like it's a bad thing. They are right, this job most certainly is not for everyone but that is most certainly not a bad thing. It is not a bad thing to not want to be pushed around, disrespected, stressed out all of the time, etc. There are so many cons I could write, but I will list the first five that come to mind: - Leadership is out of touch with their employees. The office environment is negative and people (at least the colleagues I know) are unhappy. It feels as if leadership would rather just have you quit and replace you then make things better. - There is no flexibility (even though I was consistently reassured in my interviews that it is). You work 8a-6p (if you're lucky, but it's mostly beyond that) and have 4 wfh days a quarter, regardless of your circumstances (even physical or mental health related!). - There is no avenue to give upward feedback except for a form that's sent out once a year. I've tried multiple times to verbally give feedback to my managers and VPs, but I've either been gas-lit, told my thoughts were "unrealistic" (suggesting implementing rules to protect your employees should not be unrealistic), and the most common response is "that's just how it has always been done." I can't even blame the managers and VPs for that response, they don't know any better. - I say this regardless of how well you are doing: As an associate, there's no autonomy, and I'm convinced that the managers are taught in their manager training how to micro-manage and demean their associates. My jaw has dropped multiple times listening to how leadership has spoken to myself and others. - You stop learning anything of value after the first 3-months. Bonus con: AlphaSights says that this is a "stepping stone" job or a great jumping off point for your career. Unless you have the desire to stay beyond 2 years to become a manager, I actually have 0 idea why they say that. I have never felt supported in my career journey nor do I feel like this job gives you any additional experiences or earns any more respect than that of an internship. If you're reading this and want to know more, I recommend reading the other Glassdoor reviews (positive and negative!). And if you're wondering why I have stayed so long, there are a couple reasons but believe me they were enough to have forced me to stay this long.
