Worst company I've ever worked for

Pros

Met some really talented individuals, and got to work with VR

Cons

Leadership is inexperienced and not interested in improving. Those with different opinions, both employees and players are considered "haters". Many have left already, some leaving the industry entirely, others without any job lined up due to the toxic work environment. Designers are given little to no control over design. The inexperienced leads work overtime and spring surprise design changes, overruling any other proposal. Engineers are siloed, unsupported, and blamed results after they are gone. No sprint planning occurs because the leads can't anticipate needs beyond a few days. Retrospectives do not exist at all. Management will fire individuals and teams of people without any indication that things are going poorly. The company went from having no vision, to a muddled one which they won't commit to. There is little focus on making VR/AR centric games (might as well be a port), or working in a sustainable way.

We are in a very new space and as a result are constantly learning. We are sorry you had a negative experience, but we are doing everything in our power to improve the culture and team dynamics. Some of the recent examples of initiatives we have rolled out: -Leadership and Management training -Semi-Annual employee surveys -One Up's where any employees can request meetings with their manager's manager -Bi-weekly lunch and learns We know that our biggest and most important asset is our team. We are proud and thankful for everyone at Archiact and hope to keep building on a better and more immersive future together. Thank you for your feedback, Alex+Alex (team HR)

Muddled Vision and Zero Focus

Pros

Great co-workers and a supportive environment. As a tech startup, the structure is pretty flat and allows you to have lots of responsibility and ability to affect change within your role.

Cons

The company has a muddled vision and absolutely zero focus. There’s no less than six divisions at Archiact, each siloed into their own individual budgets and goals. This makes interdepartmental collaboration a nightmare because nobody understands or cares what other departments do. As a company, it feels as though they are throwing mud at the wall and seeing what sticks. This makes it very confusing and unsettling for employees. Communication from senior management has gone from an open forum every two weeks to almost non-existent. Layoffs have been commonplace this past year, with little to no legitimate explanation for most. The company will go through hiring sprees, then undergo cost-cutting exercises and hiring freezes. Combined with no career advancement plan, it becomes evident that employees are not valued. You’re just a number to advance the bottom line for shareholders, and nothing else.

Thank you for your feedback! We are very proud of our amazing team and are making efforts to recognize and empower them. In a space that tends to have a lot of uncertainty it can sometimes be a real challenge to determine a route to success, however we are finding marked improvements in our efforts and team satisfaction so we do believe we are moving in the right direction. We look forward to continue building on the positive traction and addressing the things that detract from our ultimate goals! The bottom line is that we are always learning. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us! -Alex & Alex (Team HR)

Flexible Start-Up Culture with Growing Pains

Pros

The best parts of working at Archiact are the people, the flexible startup culture, and the work-life balance. Everyone on my team is fantastic, supportive, and enthusiastic about their job. These are the kinds of people who you become friends with outside of work, and whom you can depend on for help when work becomes more demanding. Being a startup, Archiact is an excellent place to branch out and build a diverse skill set. If you are interested in learning something outside of your original job responsibilities, you are oftentimes given the flexibility to do so (at least in my experience). As well, you are given a lot of autonomy in how you complete your work, and always welcome to research and share knowledge on better ways to do things. Work-life balance is also great at Archiact. Different times may require longer hours and more work, but this is not a constant issue. Work-life balance is definitely achievable here.

Cons

Archiact is a prime example of a company that grew too quickly in terms of headcount, while not accounting for the growth in terms of internal functions and streamlined processes. Evidence of this includes new hires starting with no equipment ready for them, having no HR staff for almost 6 months in a company of 70+ people, and having no performance evaluation systems in place. Aside from this, Archiact is lacking in the following fields: professional development, benefits and compensation, inter-team communication, and lack of transparency in upper-management decision making. In terms of professional development, the company does not invest in the professional growth of individuals. The demographic of the company is quite young, which means that junior employees are often working without the guidance or supervision of mentors/experienced professionals. As a result, most team leads or managers are promoted from outside of the company, and there does not seem to be a path or planning for internal promotions. Compensation is a bit below industry average, and there are no annual bonuses (this has apparently been in talks for years). Benefits do not cover MSP, there is no health and wellness spending, but basic health + dental are covered. Teams within the office typically do not communicate with each other. This leads to an office environment that works in silos - research and resources are not shared, and employees learn about what other staff are working on AFTER the fact. Lastly, there is no transparency in terms of upper-management decision making, and very poor communication. People in the company are unsure of the company's strategic direction or vision. Decisions are made that impact teams directly, but teams are often not told the reasons behind the decisions. As a result, rumours circulate the office, and a general distrust has formed regarding upper management.

Thank you for your feedback! We recently have implemented "State of the Arch" meetings to share more company vision, goals and updated with our team, and have committed to do this regularly. We are also recognizing Open Communication as one of the values we hold most dear. We have been encouraging collaboration across teams and it has been really making a difference.
