Great leadership and membership make the job enjoyable
Cons
The walk is not for everyone. Must be in great shape
Pros
BGC allows employees to play during specific times of the year based off of maintenances feedback and CBs mood. They provide free lunch, albeit unhealthy a large majority of the time. They allow you to leave early for emergencies and if the day is slow. I met a lot of great people both within the employee pool and member roster. A lot of the members were great people.
Cons
Terrible management, Favoritism, Lack of Structure, Scheduling Conflicts Explanation Below: CB needs to retire. Jon Evanson needs to be fired. The only person who provides any value there from a management perspective is Rudy Virga. Security Mike, the security manager, was also a great manager and stepped up whenever necessary. If anything Mike deserves a salaried position way more than Jon. CB is the head pro and Jon Evanson during my tenure there was labeled as the caddie master despite not working directly for the caddie management company. Jon, as “caddie master,” also plays favorites where caddies he doesn’t like will be put on a loop where the player is known to not tip well. Firstly why hire a caddy management company if they have no control over their caddies? Furthermore, why pay a glorified caddy master salary when his focus should be on his primary role as an operations manager? Something that can be paid on an hourly basis to save the club additional monies. Jon’s power within the management level at the club is gross. His role is more that of an advisor than an actual caddy master (THERES A COMPANY THERE FOR THAT) and operations manager and his contributions to the day to day operations should reflect as such with his lack of effort. Despite being marketed as the Caddie Master, as already mentioned, Jon also happens to be the operations manager who does literally nil. Jon likes to disappear for extended periods throughout the day and not respond to his radio. He’s been caught sleeping on the job, ignoring radio calls among other things and despite this still maintains a salaried position. He’s also tried to change the atmosphere of the operations crew by trying to enforce measures that liken the club to Augusta level restrictions. While Bayonnes privacy can be compared to that of Augusta, the elegance of being a member at Bayonne (outside of the amazing course, and beautiful club house) comes from the relaxed atmosphere as noted by members and guests alike. CB is a great role model but very overbearing. He wants something one way, Jon wants it done a different way, and it always leads to conflict in the work space. It also makes it difficult for the operations crew since there isn’t a consensus drawn as to what way things should be done which can lead to tasks needing be performed multiple times. CB has a terrible habit of promoting “always be doing something”. It’s a private golf club for gods sake. There’s going to be times where there is nothing to do and that’s okay. And if you still want to enforce this, develop a timed system so you know that at certain times certain things are being performed instead of yoloing it all the time. CB is also passive aggressive. He avoids conflict as often as possible but as a manager needs to understand he can’t and shouldn’t be afraid to tackle conflict face on. I love CB as a person, he’s got a big heart. But he wears that heart on his shirt at work too much to be an effective leader. He has Jon as his “second man” which was the worst decision he could have ever made. A brand new employee with no experience could provide more value to the operations channel than Jon could. They also wait till last second to notify you or don’t tell you at all, you don’t have a job anymore if they choose not to bring you back for the follow on season. Overall there is a complete lack of structure that creates a revolving door of employees every season and retention of only the employees that have been there since day 1 because they utilize their history with being there for so long to their advantage. Many employees should have been fired for the way they acted while I was there but because they have a limited pool of employees to choose from they’re forced to keep or forget and replace the following seasons. When it comes to scheduling, they take no regard to the hours you state you can work and will freely schedule you outside of your hours. However, they are very accommodating if you need to depart early for emergencies or if it’s a slow day which was the only positive I could draw. Until things change and certain people are replaced, I CANNOT recommend this place to anyone and would caution future potential candidates.
