Some of the coworkers were really nice people.

Marc Teer, the CEO, made an extremely hostile work environment. When he wasn't busy berating you in front of the rest of the company for something very minor, he was micromanaging the heck out of you. Marc Teer only wants to hire "yes men." If you don't agree with him, he calls you difficult. He'll shoot down an idea you have and call it "bad", only to bring up that same idea a couple weeks later as his own and then ask everyone to compliment how smart he is. Not only is he incredibly hostile towards employees, he doesn't let you meet any of his architecture friends. He went to great lengths at events to avoid being seen with his employees. It was like he was embarrassed. Which is a slap in the face to the employees who work so hard here. Oh, and did I mention that he said: - Interior designers are wunna-be architects who aren't smart enough to actually be architects - Asked a female employee after she attended an all-women's conference: "Were there any hot chicks there?" - Referred to black women in a story he was telling as "black chicks", even though that had absolutely nothing to do with the story (regardless, it's inappropriate) Nothing ever gets done here because Marc has to micromanage everything. I find it hilarious that the careers page on the site says micromanaging isn't their thing; you'll deal with that all day, everyday. He can't get someone in a senior position to stay because he wants ridiculous results, that even someone worth $250k in salary can't give you. This results in a revolving door here. Marc loads up non-senior positions with way too much work and is constantly changing direction. Everyday here was like walking on eggshells. You never knew what mood Marc was going to be in. He claims he wants you to have a life outside of work, but the expectations he sets and his comments about the progress of the company say otherwise. Another reason to not work here: Marc wants you to sign what is basically a glorified NDA when you start working here – but it's very specific in that you won't talk about what happened during your tenure at the company. Need I say more? My advice is stay as far away from this company as you possibly can. I have many other stories about what a nightmare it was working here, but for the sake of brevity and because I think I've made my point, I'll stop here.

I am sorry that your experience working at Black Spectacles was such that you felt compelled to write this review. Since I started Black Spectacles in 2010, I’ve worked with perhaps one hundred employees, freelancers, and vendors, and this is our first review on Glassdoor. I’ve been reading articles about how to respond to negative reviews on Glassdoor, and they all say that you should say thank you and write that you’re working to fix things at your company. The trouble is that the things you’ve written here are literally the opposite of the work culture that exists at our company. So I can’t in good faith write about how we’re trying to fix problems that don’t exist. So instead, I’ll take this as an opportunity to publicly explain how things really work at Black Spectacles and what we believe in. Black Spectacles is a healthy, thriving work environment that runs on core values, mutually agreed-upon goals, and lots and lots of communication. Many companies have values that are pasted on the wall and that no one lives. We’ve worked hard to live our values and to do everything we can to ensure that the folks who join our team align with our values. For example, at our weekly team meetings and biweekly 1-1s, we ask everyone to share their observations of teammates living our values, resulting in hundreds of shout-outs from our team to their teammates. At Black Spectacles, we walk the walk when it comes to core values. I’ve never experienced anything like it as a professional. It’s truly world class. We have a number of values, but first I’d like to write a little bit about trust. In the video on our careers page, I talk about trust. We filmed that a few years back, and it felt old-fashioned to talk about the trust in our company: trust among teammates and trust between managers and their teams, trust that you will figure it out, trust that we’ll support you along the way, and trust that it’s OK to make mistakes. It’s because of our trust as a team that we’ve attained such success. In six years, we went from not having any test-prep products to being the leader in architecture test prep. There is no way we would have achieved that if our culture had been like what you describe. Instead, we’ve had to be trusting, open-minded, nimble, creative, respectful, disciplined, careful and entrepreneurial. It’s with these values that our business has grown so fast—in fact Inc Magazine recognized our little venture as the eleventh fastest growing education company in its INC. 5000 program. God knows that growing that fast isn’t easy, but as everyone on the team can attest, during this period of rapid growth my leadership team and I have worked to surround ourselves with mentors and learning opportunities to ensure we’re growing a wonderful business. And so far, we’ve been successful. It’s my greatest accomplishment as a professional—an accomplishment fueled by many mentors and teachers and an open mind. One of the key ways that we’re able to work so well is that managers and teammates develop mutually agreed-upon goals. Once those goals are agreed upon, expectations are clear for everyone, and it allows folks to work autonomously. Our teammates always know what is expected of them and how well they are doing. Of course, when folks aren’t achieving their goals we address those instances privately in the 1-1, not in public. I believe that feedback, whether good or bad, needs to be shared regularly, which is why we exchange feedback biweekly. The biweekly 1-1 keeps the lines of communication open, so that teammates can share feedback with their managers about the company in general, about our values, and about anything they need to get off their chest. It’s also a regular discussion about performance, so you don’t have to wait twelve months to find out whether your boss is happy or disappointed. You get to talk about your performance every two weeks. This helps create a productive and positive working environment. Nothing is brushed under the rug or allowed to fester until it becomes a big problem. We’re all open, transparent, vulnerable, and professional about how things are going. You asserted a collection of other things- that I don’t let my teammates meet my architecture friends; that I crack jokes about interior designers, women, and minorities; and that I’m embarrassed by my employees. One of my personal values is to be respectful and compassionate. I don’t really know how to respond to these false assertions other than to suggest that folks ask anyone if that is even remotely close to how I behave. I’ll let that speak for itself. There are two things that are true in this review. 1. It’s true that we ask folks to sign a confidentiality agreement when they start. We ask folks to keep our work in the office confidential. This seems fair to me. 2. That I’m moody. That’s probably true. In all honesty this has been the hardest yet most rewarding thing I’ve ever accomplished professionally—though every time I think I have it figured out, I am confronted with something new I don’t know how to do… like responding to Glassdoor reviews! This company is sinking faster than the Titanic ship!

Pros

- I enjoyed remote work and the flexibility of half-day Fridays. - The team, apart from the CEO, was a pleasure to work with. We were virtually holding hands to maintain sanity. - The company used to provide surprisingly good perks, given its size. However, in 2023, things seem to have shifted. From what I gather, the benefits aren't as stellar as they once were. Sadly, the days of unlimited PTO and the week off between Christmas and New Year's no longer exist.

Cons

As you may have noticed from other reviews, the CEO situation is no joke. All those reviews pretty much nailed it. And, honestly, the CEO's unchangeable, a bit like a certain former president who's known for leaving chaos in his wake. Marc gives off a personable vibe at first – I mean, even during my interview, he seemed pretty chill. But when the work kicked in, it was his way or the highway. We get it, he's the CEO and his word is final... but it's like he's convinced we're all plotting against him. He's under the impression that we're secretly hoping for this product to flop. And well, that's where he's way off the mark. I genuinely believe his own team has more faith in this product than he does. But when your ideas keep getting squashed like bugs, it pretty much puts you in a corner with limited options. You had to be a total YES person to survive. Dare to counter his ideas? Well, that's a one-way ticket to hell. The company boasts about these 4 core values, but Marc? He's like the black sheep that ignores them all. Calculated risks? Nope, not his thing. Taking care of your people? Unless you're his Yes-man or woman, not happening. And don't even think about world-class in everything we do or sharing ideas safely – he'll just shoot them down. Save your creative thoughts for chats with colleagues because executing anything? Forget about it. Marc's the ultimate idea blocker. You might also see the company's ambitious aim of having a team of 50+ employees by 202X. I heard that a couple years ago. The highest headcount Black Spectacles ever reached was 33 (I think back in January 2022). Now? BKS might be plummeting below 20 employees, given how many have quit or got the boot for challenging his notions. (Cue, the dramatic entrance of Donald Trump). Why are a handful still holding on? Well, the current job market is no picnic, and bills need to be paid. Some have the advantage of not having to deal with Marc directly, so they're managing to weather this sinking ship. But make no mistake, those still here are eyeing the life vests, ready to jump onto the lifeboats when the time comes. Anyway, if you are desperate to get a remote job...I would advise you to look somewhere else. This ship won't sail smoothly unless there's a change of command.

We appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback. Regarding benefits, the unlimited PTO was changed to accrued PTO this year, based on a number of factors. While we understand some employees were not a fan of the change, overall feedback from the team has been positive. The other change was implementing a profit-sharing program to ensure everyone benefits from the success of the team. We are actively addressing other concerns and thank you for your insights. Ego-driven, toxic, fear based culture

Black Spectacles employees have always been the most positive part of this company, unfortunately it's not enough anymore.

Cons

- CEO is egocentric and has run this company into the ground. Alarming that in comments below he acts clueless to the damage he himself has inflicted. - CEO claims you can ‘talk to him’ yet those who do are met with defense or are miraculously let go. There's also NO ONE else to talk to, no support or HR resource. - Blames and punishes employees for his poor financial mismanagement of the company [i.e. no bonuses this year or unlimited pto for next] even though he claims in comments below that there's 'positive revenue growth'. - Fear based culture due to lay offs and high turnover rate - everyone is on borrowed time and they know it [Current employees are expected to take on all this extra work with even less time or resources than before] - No forward-thinking or clear vision for where the company is going, the message seems to change weekly. - Pay is well below average, with little to no room for financial or career growth, multiple people have been denied of average market range - Very low moral as strategy is struggling under enormous pressure, sales numbers talk
