A very unfortunate decline

Pros

Positives that still remain are very healthy work/life balance, encouraged to take advantage of the unlimited PTO, and the people are very kind. Very easy job. Since things are kind of falling apart in the grand scheme, the bar is pretty low. Low stress in a day-to-day sense. Pay is at the lower end of market-level. Nothing to write home about but not crazy low IMO. Benefits like remote-work and unlimited PTO make up for this

Cons

When I first started at Bonfire a few years ago, there was a feeling of community throughout the company. Everyone felt like they were very connected and enjoyed their work. Since the initial round of lay-offs in 2021 that community feeling has gone away. It has only gotten worse in the following rounds of lay-offs (one additional large round of lay-offs in 2024 and a few individuals being let go in between). Now, people log on and do their work, and log off. There is no company-wide camaraderie anymore, which isn't a necessity but it is sad to see it go away. The company's big picture plan is constantly changing. I understand this is how it goes in a start-up environment but every 6 months for the nearly 4 years I worked with Bonfire there was a new vision. First it was focusing on creators (including creating a whole sub-brand that got nixxed) then it was enterprise, and when I left it was in essence copying Shopify. The biggest con about working for Bonfire is there is no long-term stability. This company has been in the red financially for the last 1.5 years and the CEO does not have any idea how to dig them out of that outside of removing more and more people to save money. I think the rest of leadership is doing their best with what they can. There is also no upwards career growth within the company. About a year ago they demoted all VP level staff.

Pros

- Great perks; unlimited PTO is really unlimited, flexible schedules depending on your team. - Director level and down are caring, kind, fun, encouraging, and easy to work with. - Cool events, offsites, and team buildings now that COVID is relaxing.

Cons

- No room for advancement. - HR is a joke. There have been 5 or 6 different leaders in HR in a few years, and they cycle out without ever setting up clear policies. - Salaries for everyone under director level have not changed since 2019 and the lack of salary transparency is really frustrating. When we asked the CEO, he let us know that we could leave if we didn't like the compensation. - Communication from VP and C-suite got more and more insular and disconnected. No one seemed to know what was going on. - Operations was a mess, the daily functioning of the company was run on google sheets and google docs, with the leadership not seeming to know what was really going on underneath them - Values that were shared publicly were not shared internally

Pros

Bonfire is loaded with talented people across the board. I always knew I could count on the team to get things done well and back me up in a tight spot. The culture is very fun and laid back, and there is an overall air of good feeling in the office.

Cons

Early mornings! Most of the product and marketing team are in the office by 7/7:30am, and I’m not a morning person.
