Toxic Leadership, Toxic Culture

Pros

The idea of the company feels good and has gotten tons of buzz... Until you experience the reality of Brandless, you fall for Tina's spiel about changing the world.

Cons

Absolutely toxic leadership that flows down from the very top. Terribly managed, especially by the CEO. Brandless preaches kindness yet is flagrantly unkind to its employees. They treat their employees like dirt but go around claiming to be wonderful. Unbelievably dishonest, including and especially to its consumers (they just raised prices on their current assortment). Callous HR (who must have written the only positive reviews on this site). They just fired someone on maternity leave 3 weeks after she gave birth. This company is straight up mean while masquerading like they're doing good in the world. There is no way it will succeed.

Pros

The insurance is great, there's a lot of free stuff and it's fundamentally impossible to screw anything up any worse than it already is.

Cons

The company mission is a complete sham. You're there to prop up the fragile egos of people who need to believe they are "leaders" in spite of volumes of evidence to the contrary. Questioning their supreme authority in all matters is a major offense punishable by petty dismissiveness and smarmy snark, but they'll never actually fire you because they know they can't recruit anyone else to put up with them in less than 6 months' time. It's an incredibly toxic passive-aggressive environment dominated by whoever throws the biggest tantrum. If you are in any way competent at anything all you will ever be allowed to do is clean up the messes of senior leadership and watch them re-make that exact same mess over and over again no matter how many times they fail. The only thing anyone actually cares about is getting rich "influencers" to post pictures of Brandless products on Instagram and it gets old real fast. The site is riddled with serious bugs that are never addressed, the products are all things you can buy literally anywhere else, most are of embarrassingly poor quality and no one's figured out how to ship any of them safely yet because the fulfillment workers are paid virtually nothing. And all the five star reviews up here are coerced if not completely fake. Employees are routinely encouraged to go post new ones to offset all the negative because that's a lot easier than actually improving the culture. Super classy.

Thank you for writing a review. It sounds like you were truly unhappy at Brandless and I hope you have found something that is a better fit for you personally. While I disagree with your perspective, I appreciate that it is your right to share your feedback - whatever it may be - in this forum. However, there are two statements you made in your post that are wholly untrue, so I want to make sure anyone reading this in the future isn't mislead. Firstly, we do not run our own fulfillment centers nor employ workers in them (as we partner with a third party logistics provider) and therefore Brandless does not determine or influence their workers' pay. Secondly, as the leader of our People Team, I can attest that we have never coerced or even encouraged employees to provide reviews (not to mention 5-star reviews) on Glassdoor. All of the reviews on this page come at their writers' own discretion, and we are grateful to receive all the honest feedback so we can continue to learn and build our culture.

Benefits and coworkers. That's about it

Cons

There were some very inappropriate comments made during a speech that made quite a few employees very uncomfortable.

As Head of People at Brandless, it is extremely important to me and to the other members of the leadership team that our employees feel respected and safe, so I would love to hear more about the speech you're referencing.
