Pros

Unlimited PTO (although you will be pinged constantly during it)

Cons

It's hard to know where to begin with the cons of Bypass (or Bypass POS or Bypass Mobile..maybe settle on a name, at least?) Individually, most people are okay. Some of them are even pretty great. Collectively, the company is an organizational nightmare. Every problem that arises is someone else's responsibility. Good luck getting internal support. They partner with whomever will throw money at them, leading to a product that is haphazard and difficult to support - see their business pivot of 2015. There is no vision at the executive level beyond selling more devices. When they promote, if they promote, they do it based on time-served, with little regard for any other qualities including actual skills needed for a position. There is absolutely no work-life balance. It doesn't matter if you're in the hospital, on vacation, or in the bathroom - your time is not your own. The salaries for non-engineers are laughable, especially in a city such as Austin. During my tenure there were a number of high-profile exits, including account managers that only lasted four months. This should have been a warning sign. Projects were assigned and never followed up on. Tasks were doled out with no direction, no structure and the majority of the feedback received was negative. New responsibilities outside the scope of your role were added without discussion and then harped on during 1x1's if not completed. Processes changed with little to no explanation as to why. Attempts to improve quality of work were met with non-committal shrugs and promises to look into it at a later date. Customers were treated as though they were idiots internally - trying to be Apple and saying "they don't know what they want, we do" is all well and good if you have products that support that "philosophy". Using technology to solve problems was unheard of - unfathomable for a technology company. Things were done in a certain way because they were always done in a certain way. All in all, a baffling experience and an absolute waste of time in terms of career goals and personal achievement.

Unhealthy corporate culture

Pros

Very cool product with a lot of potential. The company seems to have a pretty solid cash flow and a plan for where they want to go. They're growing quickly Compensation is decent. Unlimited paid time off.

Cons

Management employs tactics that are severely detrimental to company culture, morale, and employee wellbeing: Only accomplishments that involved a great deal of work outside normal business hours are recognized/rewarded Initiatives are occasionally announced requiring employees to accomplish more work than normal for a certain period of time. Often the "we are a startup after all" card is played. In at least one instance, additional mandatory work hours were set. No bonuses While the company expects employees to refine their skills on their own time, no training/development/assistance is provided. Even when the company is trying to hire/grow rapidly, employees are regularly fired unexpectedly and with minimal explanation Some departments have an after-hours and weekend on-call rotation that ranges from minor annoyance to brutally soul-crushing ordeal. There is also an unspoken expectation that even if you're not on call, you're generally reachable via HipChat and will respond to questions Most of the employees, including "senior" management are relatively young. There are no seasoned veterans. Staff is very homogenous. Very little diversity. No HR department. They tout this as a benefit, which maybe it could be, but many of the aforementioned shenanigans would not happen with HR oversight Being a relatively flat organization, there's room to move laterally, but not up.

Pros

Fridge is stocked with food and drinks. Unlimited paid time off (but apparently that is frowned down upon). Company has outings, sometimes during the day and other times after work hours.

Cons

If you're an employee who works on the road 60%-100% realize you won't be home but a couple days a month (and that's on salary). The company loves Slack chat room, so beware. Managers are always looking for updates even if it's after you worked 17 hours straight and are exhausted. I never saw a team environment at this company which is unfortunate, employees are forced to ask for advice on Slack. If you're working in a certain department you should feel confident asking your team for help and they should be willing to help if they have the knowledge, not shrug you off. Managers shouldn't claim that asking other teammates for help is unacceptable, because it's the pos world that's not how it works. Teamwork should be encouraged, not dissuaded.
