In my experience, almost everybody over the age of 50 who is in direct contact with executive management looked miserable. I watched people who are good at what they do get burnt out because of consistent badgering by executive corporate management to increase sales. The only managers that I've witnessed succeed are those that chose to fall in line with executive directives and/or become polished corporate lackeys for management. Even the lowest sales engineers look like they been threw 10 rounds with a heavy weight boxer after a visit from executive management.

No matter how hard you work you will never be told you are doing a good job. If you make sales goal for the month you better be ready to be told how badly you are doing for the up coming month by not having work lined up. Expect to be lied to and to keep your resume ready at all times. I didn't know a single sales engineer or inside sales that wasn't trying to leave no matter if they had a good or bad sales month.
