Pros

One can work somewhat autonomously, depending on the office. You're doing mission-based work for a national leader on the issue of homelessness (until the mission was changed); mostly you're working with really talented, smart, creative, and committed staff.

Cons

NO work-life balance, though they talk the talk about it. You're required to travel a LOT and expected to do it so cheaply, just shy of a KOA campground. No training - you're just thrown in and expected to swim immediately. Line of command is not coordinated resulting in several people asking you for conflicting projects and timelines; WAY too much "navel gazing"! They're always getting grants to evaluate HOW we work every year or so, so there's some new schtick everyone follows for the first month. Evaluations are conducted twice a year along with complicated work plans. Sometimes it feels as if you spend more time evaluating your work than actually working.

Pros

Some of the brightest co-workers around! Well-known in industry = great career opportunities when you move along.

Cons

Overall, the organization does a poor job of managing workloads and providing appropriate support to professional staff. Resistance to providing staff with promotions/pay increases until there is an concrete risk of losing them. High levels of burnout.

Pros

Since my last day in Feb 2024, I have tired to think of things I valued about this organization and unfortunately, I have nothing great to say

Cons

I worked on both a regional team and on the federal team. Both experiences were terrible. People leave this organization for many reasons but I noticed how many are fed up of the change talk that goes around in circles. It’s a lot of white people talking about how to treat people from marginalized groups…. so they perform diversity hires so that “everyone” can be a part of the conversation but then they drain those people who perform so much emotional labor but wont implement their ideas. I think that speaks volumes itself but I also have questions and doubts about so many other aspects. Some examples being, how nobody could ever describe what federal technical assistance actually is- yet they provide it!? The organization has clear divisions and works rather divinely across race, class and gender and there is no feeling of true unity or belonging.
