Camp Fire is a wonderful organization and is doing fantastic work providing inclusive camp and extra curricular opportunities to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity. That being said, everything about the organization is stagnant and rooted in an extremely out of date model. The organization is so fractured and individual councils have diverged so much from one another that they are almost unrecognizable. This would not be such a major issue if the overarching National office was not attempting to force a unified agenda upon the individual councils. These issues combine to form an organization that is having enormous difficulties adapting to modern times. Pay is extremely low (I operated for my first two years on a salary of $26,500), which would not be such a problem if there was an opportunity to make meaningful forward strides towards a livable income. Unfortunately, even if raises were something the organization could afford (which they cannot) the point is moot given the fact that the organization is on a course to shut down entirely within the next decade. I love this organization and am still a very active volunteer, so it makes me very sad to write this.
