I was laid off during a critical phase of a major project—something that came as a complete surprise, especially when the executives constantly emphasize that all hands were needed to deliver projects. Shortly afterward, I saw on LinkedIn that a new Chief Product Officer was brought in, and heard from a previous coworker that a strict return-to-office policy was reinstated. It was hard not to notice the disconnect: budget constraints were cited as a reason for cutting technical staff, yet there seemed to be no issue allocating funds for a new executive hire. I can't speak for post-RTO. However, even before RTO, the culture had started to feel overly controlling, with a growing sense of being constantly monitored. The environment became increasingly toxic and demoralizing.
