I'd been with Dome for over half a decade. I'd gone through tonnes of changes, hardships and seen mass exoduses but, the recent changes being implemented quite literally broke my body and diminished my passion for hospitality.
-Manager role is meaningless. Everything has to be "reported" to coach operator. They change rosters without asking.
-My coach operator Jessica Dean abused their authority and took everything personally therefore, they would give you all night shifts, reduce your hours, deny holidays.
-Recently, after opening new cafes they've cut labour and introduced a new template for duty managers to do the work of 3 people. When this began multiple mangers, duty managers and staff reported back issues. It didn't change until the coach operator had to experience those hours. They also introduced it under a false premise of a "trail" run but, when given feedback it was disregarded.
-They don't operate under fair work. They have an enterprise agreement which is ageist and unfair.
-They prioritise hiring high school kids for low cost and people on visas who do double shifts.
-If you don't want use the automatic milk frother because customers complain about it, expect to get fired by them reducing your hours.
-Have a suggestion get fired
-Say you feel too overworked and suggest a change, get put onto night shifts.
-If you don't work hard enough, they wont tell you and reduce your hours.
-There was an incident where I had a particular coworker who was brazen and politically incorrect but, the customers loved them and they were a decent worker. They left this and allowed it for so long by the time he had his first HR meeting he was quickly fired.
-My manager great at their job but unfortunately they have no power and they often got intimidated by my coworkers by taking things personally and misreading them.
-There is a lack of training. The majority of the job is self-learning.
-Moral is low currently.
-Rock up to your job and get told to drive to your first aid lesson you didn't know about.
-Rock up to help another cafe out, they don't talk to you and don't tell you were things are.
-Lack of communication - the only time you get told anything is if your write a complaint that has to go to head office (secrecy).
-One free hot coffee a day.
-Took away free meals for duty managers (so there's actually no benefit to become one besides a minimal pay rise).
The main reason I quit was because I began having lower back pain issue due to an increased workload and lack of help. I was made to work in a hazardous environment where the cafe was flooded but was still told to keep working. When I reported this incident and had a HR meeting it felt very rehearsed and it being the first time it's ever happened is a poor excuse and show of their inability to act quickly and efficiently considering the physical and mental health of all employees.
I loved my job, I loved the people my coworkers and the guests. But, I've noticed customers complain more. I talked to my coworkers and some of them are scared to loose their job, scared to speak up or even take one day off. They're tired of management not listening to their schedule request that are non-negotiable due to uni/appointments/family. Some people didn't get their annual leave upon resigning. When someone fought for it, they got half.
The people made the job worth it despite it's issues but not anymore. They changes were not for me. The fact that Jessica Dean became a coach op is beyond me when other restaurants (that are not Dome) have complained about her. She goes to help out a cafe up north and somehow their complaints reach us here in Perth. The fact that she has made all of the good hardworking employees leave due to abuse of authority, changing shifts without notice, changing them to be unfair, and decreasing them because she doesn't like what you have to say is outrageous. She's had multiple complaints but head office doesn't investigate or do anything because she's there because she knows and is friends with the other coach operator. Pure nepotism. To be led by a person who told me "their job is to google things" is ridiculous. She has asked to keep the decrease of a coworkers schedule secret and has been told off for gossiping but then when she hears gossip tells you off.
These aren't all the stories. Besides two points, all of this is from one cafe. I knew I had to leave when one day I just genuinely could not smile at a guest and it truly broke my heart that the work conditions affected me so deeply I couldn't provide the service I was once so passionate about.
I knew that I had to have another job before I quit because they would strip me of my hours which is illegal. When i did resign I only had 3 shifts for my last 2 weeks. Which is below my 21 hour/ week on the contract i signed. They do this to everyone who resigns. They don't care about your livelihood.
This review, yes it's biased, yes it's a bit emotional. It however, is true beyond a doubt. I loved my job. I would've stayed there for countless years. But no one wanted to fight for their rights due to being scared.
