Pros

There are no pros. They don’t care about their employees. It’s all about image.

Cons

Everything. They only care about what looks best and at the expense of employees. You aren’t allowed to have personal boundaries. Patrons are entitled brats because of upper management’s obsession with keeping them happy at any cost (that includes YOUR boundaries!) I’ve seriously never seen so many people get so serious over a library. The schedule SUCKS. The pay is low. They take the “servant” part of “public servant” a little too literally.

Pros

Some of the staff are really amazing people. Full time staff get decent benefits. It's impossible to get fired.

Cons

The WORST schedule I've ever seen. (The schedule changed a few years ago, so older positive reviews on here are from before the change). Emergency room staff have said we have a worse schedule than they do. Used to have us doing 18 days in a row with only 2 days off that were not side by side. Then they switched it to only 11 days in a row. Burnout is rampant among staff, but admin made sure to let us all know that THEY are no longer working weekends. Admin does NOT care about staff. They'll pretend to, to your face, but all they care about is how the library looks to the public. There's someone in admin who regularly sends condescending emails out to everyone. Pay sucks. Due to the bad pay and bad schedule, they keep losing staff, so you would get assigned extra duties for months at a time with little to no recognition for doing so. I know multiple people who were doing 2 or 3 people's jobs for almost a year. Patrons will yell, scream, harass, grab you, and threaten you and still be allowed back time after time. The lack of concern for staff (and patron) safety is appalling. Speaking of violence, there has been staff on staff violence that has been swept under the rug in at least 3 instances that I know of. Which is why "impossible to get fired" is also a con, because these people were not fired, simply moved around. In one case, I know at least 5 people who quit or moved due to workplace violence that wasn't being properly addressed. No paid maternity/paternity leave. Seriously its 2022 this should be standard at this point. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. Just don't do it, go somewhere else.

Pros

Top level staff and library board treat the rank and file badly, not concerned with them. In two of the branches I have worked in you will learn about office snitches that report to the top. Stressful office politics while you try to do your work.

Cons

Everything just about, not much positive, just low pay and long hours and weekends
