Pros

They managed to trap some of the best people I’ve ever worked with. Nothing bonds employees together like collective trauma. Work from home is largely the norm. The office is a really cool space.

Cons

This place will stagnate your career at best, and destroy it if you let it. Projects are routinely neutered and deadlines are impossible ensuring that when you leave you’ll leave with nothing to show for your time here. “Aim high” is a thing you say, never a thing you actually do. Standards are nonexistent. No desire to improve on anything. This place burns through creatives. My 1.25 years here made me qualify as “long-term”. No leadership. Consistently set up for failure. Important tasks are done backwards if at all. CEO is obsessed with design and as a result will listen to nothing you say unless you’re agreeing with him. Staff routinely cherry picks the feedback they want to hear. Misreporting is celebrated. Can’t learn from mistakes because mistakes are never acknowledged. Between Nov - March 2021 many new people were hired. By April 2021 nearly every new hire reported feeling burnt out. Severely mismanaged. New employees forced to come into office unnecessarily during a pandemic. New employees given no guidance, taking sink or swim to an extreme. Looks like they’re doing good from the outside, but is not as it appears to the world. My personal and professional morals were challenged on multiple occasions.

Pros

- free lunch everyday until the festival (so you don’t go out and keep working) - good location, currently located in the financial district - transparent with progress/ numbers - majority of employees are type A players, high intensity (would recommend to diversify employees)

Cons

- initially sounds like a fantastic company, but once you’re in you realize how unstructured, chaotic, and selfish the leadership team is - misleads and releases false information to the public to make it seem like this tech fest is in high demand...when in reality we are well below target and not meeting expectations - fair warning: the job you sign up for is not the job you will be doing. 95% of employees end up being pressured by leadership team to change roles based on their needs, has absolutely no regard or care to your professional growth or career. - this event is a one hit wonder (2017), and sets unrealistic numbers for the team to achieve. They publicly state they project 10,000 attendees, false, completely false. - the majority of employees are unhappy and overly stressed out - large number of employees are looking for the next opportunity while working here - expect set timelines for deliverables to be delayed or forgotten about until it becomes a ‘red flag’ - high stress environment, walk on egg shells, feels like everyone has scatter brains - unnecessary DAILY standups and 3 hours long bi-weekly all hands meeting (waste of time and productivity) - this company is the biggest catfish STAY AWAY!!!!!

Selling DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) to collect money

The new team launched in 2021 had the most passionate, dedicated and talented group of colleagues I've ever worked with.

Cons

I used to admire Elevate when they were running annual tech festival in the past. They should have not expanded their business beyond the annual tech festival; they have NO clue about what it takes to build an organization that runs community-based programs daily. They are good at selling their brand and government lobbying, and that’s why they were able to collect lots of funding from all levels of government and launched the new initiative last year focusing on DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion)-driven tech workforce development training programs. They promoted their new initiative using terms like DEI and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color), and hired several new folks from BIPOC community last year to make their previous “white-dominant” team more “diverse” as part of their "DEI commitment" when they were selling the new initiative to several funders/corporate partners. Today, their new initiative is failing the entire Elevate internally and externally because of their poor, broken leadership team, which has no skills in people management, daily program operations and organizational development EXCEPT collecting money. As their new initiative is not going well, they’ve been more top-down and oppressive towards the new team members who have worked like 10-12hrs per day since they’ve joined the team last year. The leadership team does not thoroughly assess what the real issues are (themselves); they tend to blame employees based on the program/project numbers. Not to mention that Elevate leadership never had such a huge amount of government project funding in the past, and that’s why the leadership team had no clue about what to track as part of reporting requirements including lots of paperwork. I’ve worked with several senior leadership teams in my career, but the Elevate leadership team was probably one of the worst because they failed to create a supportive environment with clear directions and systems in place. Beyond my unpleasant experience with Elevate’s leadership, I'm mostly upset that Elevate was able to collect lots of public money using DEI and BIPOC languages, even though they had no track records of successfully running any type of community-based programs in the past. It deeply concerns me when I think about many community organizations led by hardworking BIPOC leaders that do not have adequate access to much needed funding while making a real impact in the community. It clearly shows the broken funding system in the non-profit sector.
