Conceptually Good, Structurally Manipulative - Director 17 Asset Management Employee Review

Pros

The concept and mission are spot on - partnering for sustainable development is a lofty and worthy goal. There were some wonderful people I met while there, who I have stayed in touch with post my departure. A lot of responsibility in a very unstructured way, so you learn a lot very quickly. Looks good on a resume if interested in impact investing.

Cons

I've been in finance and investing for almost a decade and I've never seen another company that takes advantage of stary eyed young professionals wanting to make a difference like this. I started as a fellow - which is a fancy way of saying unpaid intern - and stayed on full-time as an "exec" because I believed so absolutely in the mission. I thought my views were respected, and that the fact that almost no one else had actual asset management or investing experience would be smoothed over with time and education. But I was manipulated. I was promised a path to compensation that was all smoke and mirrors. I sacrificed other opportunities based on commitments that never advanced. I worked 100+ hr weeks for months, offered alternative paths to compensation, and used personal connections to try to advance things. But when it came down to me asking for a structural upside, which is market standard in private fund investing, I was locked out of my email and disparaged to the partners and colleagues I was working with. I've never heard from the founder again. It still blows my mind sometimes.

Pros

None that I can say at this time. A good culture and progressive values have been tainted by false promises, lack of good faith communication, money owed to former individuals who transitioned from an unpaid fellowship to employee status.

Cons

Do not engage with this firm.
