Pros

The partner I work with. The hard working fellow medics and EMTs who work for this company have my sincerest regards and some of them are like family. We used to have full crews and before the current micromanagement took charge it was a decent place to work.

Cons

Now for the cons. There are too many to list but I will give you the biggest. If you are looking for good pay, this ain't the place for it. You can work here for 10+ years and you might make it to $15 per hour. If you are looking for good supervisors, this ain't the place for it. They have no management skills and couldn't manage their way out of a wet paper bag. If you want a good dispatch team, it ain't here. If you want to work for a properly managed EMS company, look someplace else. The manager here does not understand how to properly manage the staff and there are always staffing needs each and every day. We have plenty of trucks to put on the road, but the manager won't allow personnel to work part time hours. He would rather fire someone for needing part time hours to tend to family obligations and run a short staff into the ground over 14 hour days each day than to allow them to work the hours they can and have another part time crew come in to cover the remaining time. He runs crews 14+ hours with no lunch breaks. Last I checked that's illegal. He expects people to come in on days off to do state required training. Last I checked, that has to be done on scheduled days working. Guess what? He can't because he ran off 80% of our staff. There is no morale here whatsoever. I got into this business to help people and make a difference, but not at the expense of my back, my own health, and my family life. This company needs an enema, because it is full of you know what. Corporate needs to take a close look at how the Knoxville management is running things before they run off any more good help. No one wants to work 14 hour days every single shift. This isn't a fluke. It is happening every single week. There's no incentive to work this hard. We can't make our contractual obligations when our crews are being called out to a P1 call completely across town because the team that should be covering that area called out after three days of 14+ hours of back to back calls. I'm surprised we haven't lost the city contract yet. I'm over this place and I am seeking another line of work. That is what AMR takes from you. Your desire to be a medic. Don't let that happen to you. You have been warned.

Pros

AMR San Mateo is making huge strides in changing the Old Boy culture of EMS. The operation is collaborative, cares for its employees, and acts with accountability.

Cons

Although it's much better than it was, AMR San Mateo still deals with staffing issues, primarily for medics, and forced mandation is still in play.

Pros

As we continue to strengthen our culture, our Core Behaviors remain the foundation for how we lead, engage, and deliver results across our teams. These behaviors are not just guiding principles—they define the expectations for how we interact with each other, our patients, and our communities every day. At their core, these behaviors drive consistency and alignment across the organization. By prioritizing care, encouraging open communication, seeking to understand, collaborating on solutions, and holding ourselves accountable, we create an environment grounded in trust, respect, and shared responsibility. I am proud to be part of a great organization that exemplifies the core behaviors.

Cons

Success of the Core Behaviors depends on consistent leadership, clear application, and sustained reinforcement over time. This is a challenge that will take time.
