Pros

I have been a tutor with APL for almost 3 years now and had it not been for Shayna, the founder, giving me a chance right out of graduate school, I don’t know where I’d be. Being an APL tutor thoroughly prepared me for being in the classroom full-time as I am now a full-time teacher for a great charter school. All of the experiences I had with students both in and outside the classroom was invaluable. Every training, every tutoring session, and every logging in of notes made me feel super confident to apply and interview for educator positions. Now I am in charge of my own classroom! If you are just out of college or in transition with jobs and looking for something new and rewarding, then try Action Potential Learning. Very friendly staff, full support in your success as a tutor is given and they are always appreciative of the work you do with the students. While it is mostly part-time, it is good pay, flexible schedule and Shayna is great about giving enthusiastic tutors first priority when extra tutoring assignments come up. One year, I worked with two schools every day-- one in the morning and another in the afternoon, which gave me a lot of hours.

Cons

It is mostly part-time work.

Pros

I have been in education for 9 years, and this is the most rewarding job I have ever had. I look forward to going to work every day and am sad the school year is almost over. Each class period, I work with a different group of students, which makes each day exciting and new. I tutor no more than six students per class, helping them master skills in reading and writing by providing the individualized support they need in order to succeed. I have built amazing relationships with the staff and students and know that everyone really appreciates what I do. Shayna, the president of APL, is always available to answer questions or even provide more training through various courses if needed. I took a reading course through APL that provided a lot of valuable resources and ideas that I then implemented during tutorials. The support is endless, and because of the valuable training, I feel confident that I have truly made a difference.

Cons

It is only a part-time position. I wish I could work here full-time!!
