Pros
- Remote work - Decent benefits and fair compensation - Some colleagues are very nice
Cons
Ancestry has had like 3 layoffs in the past 4 years while having teams that have been understaffed and are now even more understaffed picking up the pieces. It is entirely normal for many teams to have incredibly annoying managers that slack you after 5pm and have an "emergency mode" task every.other.day because it's a "senior leadership request!!!" that forces you to work past 5, sometimes past 9, it is incredibly exploitative and infuriating, from both senior leadership and from managers. Managers will then turn around and say how thankful they are for you working past 5, and pretend to show empathy...except the cycle repeats week after week after week. Management's priorities seem to contradict each other every year when there's inevitably a new plan (basically we are at the whim of Blackstone, who owns us and is a big reason for the annual layoffs) and a new emergency priority (!). While coworkers are mostly nice people there's definitely a lack of diversity and also a lot of people who take their jobs way too seriously. You really wonder if they care to live their lives instead of being a cog in a machine for a corporate job that isn't that meaningful. Glad I left!
